I guess this one is in the same "series" as my recent Uhura piece . That would be the....uh... "inspirational sci-fi women of my younger years". So here we have SHADO Moonbase commander, Gay Ellis. And yes... her purple wig IS AWOL. This is her "off duty style" (as seen in other episodes). Much as I love the purple wigs, I just felt like doing a different presentation... AND using some of the great Gay Ellis/SHADO freebies out there.This is definitely one of those pieces where I stand on the shoulders of "Freebie Giants". The Gabrielle Drake face morph www.sharecg.com/v/50270/browse… is by Gary Sayers gsayers1953.deviantart.com/ and made available by JoEtzold. I tweaked it a bit, but Gary did a fantastic job capturing the actress' quirky/cute/almost anime facial features.

"It is never explained why female Moonbase personnel uniformly wore mauve or purple wigs, silver catsuits, and extensive eye make-up (although it has been suggested[by whom?] it was to combat static electricity) and their unusual livery is never discussed in the series. Gerry Anderson has commented that it made them look more futuristic and that it filmed better under the bright lights, while Sylvia Anderson said she believed wigs would become accepted components of military uniforms by the 1980s. Whenever female Moonbase personnel visited Earth (as Ellis and Barry did from time to time), their lunar uniforms were never worn."

I loved the incongruity of the brisk efficiency with which the girls in UFO went about their business holding clipboards - like Wrens in a war movie - while dressed like dominatrixs.

Actually this was UFO - made about 5 years before 1999. Space:1999 started out as a sequel to this show, but evolved into it's own unique entity before it went into production. Of all the Gerry Anderson shows I watched as a kid, UFO is the one that ages best into adulthood for me.
