You were using Copic Sketch, ne? The best way to do shading is just to go over it with the same color one more time. That usually gives off the propar effect, you can do it 2 or 3 more times if it isn't dark enough. Most paper won't take more than 4 coats though. Some Watercolor Paper may take up to 6 coats.

With the grays, I usually just use the different shades because it gives me the effect I want. Like Just using C5 and C7, Amon's shirt looks all silky or something, which was the effect I was going for. Usually, I'll just go over it a couple times, like what I did for the wine.
