Description
Hawa Mahal is a palace in Jaipur, India. The name means "Palace of the Wind" because the wind passes through the windows of the beehive exterior. It was built as an extension of the Royal City Palace in 1799.The palace is devoted to Krishna and it's facade matches the outline of Lord Krishna’s crown. It is a unique combination of Mughal and Rajput architectural styles, and is made with a distinctive red-pink sandstone. Hawa Mahal was built without a foundation, and is thought to be the tallest building in the world without a foundation. The five-storey building manages to stay upright because of it is curved shaped.
The entrance is through the City Palace where doors open into a spacious courtyard. Its unique honeycomb facade facing the street was built to allow royal ladies to observe everyday life and festivals celebrated in the street below without being seen, since they had to obey the strict rules of "purdah", which forbade them from appearing in public without face coverings. It has 953 small windows called Jharokhas decorated with intricate latticework. This architectural feature allows cool air to pass through, which makes the whole area more pleasant during the high temperatures in summer. Many people see the Hawa Mahal from the street view and think it is the front of the palace, but in reality it is the back of that structure.
