Description The house has settled now
My parents are asleep
The task is left to me
To seal our homely keep

So gingerly I step
So deep into the night
To lock the door ajar
To douse the final light

There’s solace in this chore
Despite the loneliness
It’s fallen to my judgement
My parents are remiss

As quiet as a whisper
As gentle as can be
It’s something I control
It’s something I decree

Now once the door is sealed
And the bulbs have dimmed away
I’m stranded in the darkness
Amongst the shadowplay

So silent I become
So still I then remain
My fears I must keep secret
My screams I must refrain

The black glass of the window
Reflecting none but me
There’s something yet beyond it
That only I can see

It stares with eyes of nothing
It breathes with haggard wisps
A rap upon the black glass
A scratch of finger tips

The lock won’t save me now
Though I’ve done my job
My eyes dart to the door
To the slow turn of the knob
