Description
Sup everyone!?Ok, so yeah. I've been forgetting how to draw from time to time for some reason, so I decided to create myself a little study guide to show how I usually go about my figure drawing on a step-by step basis.
Luckily for you guys, I decided to share my formula with you. I have met some great people/artist here on DA and learned from the best as my inspiration. So I figured I return the favor for beginner artists and those who are having a difficult time remembering how to draw like me.
So without further or due. Here is lesson 1 on the Upper Torso. I will be making more of these of course, so keep an eye out and be ready for lesson 2. I hope this helps in one way or another. Have fun with this and do what you like with it. Share it with friends, print it out and stash it in your binders, and blah blah blah
P.S: These lessons will be moved to scraps within the week.

Thank you so much! This is so useful and helpful. I've just started taking lessons where I'd need to draw humanoid figures in my Digital Media course, and all I've managed so far is to craft a whole circus troop of odd-shaped/sized circus freaks! This will come in handy, thank you so much!

I am impressed.
Someone's been studying Andrew Loomis, Burne Hogarth, George Bridgeman et.al or getting creative on the spur of sheer imagination and talent..?
WELL DONE IN ANY CASE!

I've been picking at a few books here and there trying to find my own way to go about things, but I don't know if the books I have are by any of those guys.
Thanks for the kind words

Go to GOOGLE, type in ANDREW LOOMIS BOOKS and get sites that offer free PDF's of all of his out of print works. All of them are priceless.

That's the most important link but there are also others with the same books. Give it a try with George Bridgeman too or Will Pogany, Jack Hamm... Stunning examples of a soon-to-be forgotten art of showing the ropes of the drawing craftsmanship.
My pleasure, dood.

Borat.
Remember Borat - Sasha Baron Coen's Khazakhstani character exploring America..?
His other incarnation - white skinned Afro-American, Ali-G used the phrase BOOYAKASHA.
Used to be quite big in the UK, apparently didn't leave traces in the US.

I just wanted to say, thanks so much for this! I've been trying to improve my drawing, and I've always struggled to get a good base, never really found anything that works for me, but this is brill! Connecting shapes by a block by block basis. A straight-forward base to start off from! THanks so much for putting this up!

Hey! No problem
There are not a lot of step by step drawing books out there that realyl break it down to simple steps, so I thought I'd share my process in hopes that it will not only benefit me, but others as well.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts about my method. It means a lot, and I hope you have much success with it.

Pretty awesome. Still working on my own process, so it's always helpful to see how someone else works or goes through the process.

Thanks. I need to transition out of this technique a little more and start to focus more on stylizing my stuff. I'm always drawing dummy figures just to see If I can stay consistent with different poses, but I'm still having a hard time staying with it. Kinda pisses me off when I get a technique I like very much ends up just being another stepping stone for another undiscovered technique that I need to discover

It is never-ending journey friend. There will always be ways to improve.
It's a nice process to start with, for sure. And you have definitely put a lot of work into it!
I think what might help is to examine several different body types (large and round; tall and skinny; square and broad; etc.) using your method and see how they look with it. That and continually practicing poses with it.
I'm actually going back to exaggeration, I abandoned the idea of it too early. Really going to push the shapes and expressions much more, out of my comfort zone.

Your third paragraph is exactly what I'm doing right now. I'm trying all different sizes of anatomy at this point along with improving my techniques. Dude! I finally figured out how to draw legs better. I had such a hard time with those, but I think I finally got it. And it's such a minor add on to my usual technique that I can't believe I over looked it. Works well for both female and male bodies. I'll throw up a study guide on that when I get around to it.
Yeah man, definitely push those exaggerations. It will suit your style ten fold, I guarantee it.
Your style calls for it

Glad the legs are working out better for you! Legs - especially on a female character - are extremely important to get "right" (of course within the scope of your own style). Yet they often go overlooked in favor of hands, face, etc.
Sounds like good study guide material.
Definitely going to psh for more exaggeration. Push it until the design is nearly "broken", then reel it back in from there.

I hope so. I would like to not only help myself but others as well. Just practice it enough and you should get the hang of it. But everyone is different, so be open minded to other techniques if this isn't the best one for ya. I say this through experience

Yeah, it's something a little different. I hope it will help people understand the anatomy better using these sort of shapes. I'm still having a hard time figuring out certain perspective views, but that's why I'm doing this to also help me play around more with this technique and take my time with it.
