“Well this is us now, isn’t it?” Bradley said aloud with his new, soft voice while looking in the mirror at his sister’s face. A few hours ago Bradley, his sister Jenna, and their mother Margaret had reported to the body auction, leaving with all three of their brain chips installed in Jenna’s younger body - Bradley and Margaret’s body being sold to the highest bidder.

I suppose it is, we’ll get through this. We always have. Bradley’s mother replied with a conciliatory tone through their shared thoughts. The family had been struggling financially since 2235 when Jacob, the dad of the family, had disappeared while working his job at the factory. The central authorities reported that his brain chip had been stolen during the night shift. After months of waiting and mourning, the family had completely burned through the small amount of savings Jacob had earned over the last few years. They were forced to sell their house and move into a small apartment while Margaret tried to find a job. Soon, Jenna and Bradley dropped out of school to try to find jobs as well. Eventually Bradley was able to pick up work at the same android factory that his father worked at, but at much lower pay. He could barely cover their rent!

Jenna spoke aloud with their shared lips, “This was a mistake, wasn’t it? We should have waited at least a few more months before we sold off your bodies. I shouldn’t have told you about the body auction in the first place.” Jenna was dating a rich young woman for a few months and heard about how the ultra rich would sometimes buy extra bodies from poor people; they would network multiple bodies together such that a single brain chip could control them all at once. It was illegal to build new human bodies for this purpose, but central authorities seemed to turn a blind eye to buying poor people’s bodies from them. The family made off with a few million credits in exchange for selling Bradley and Margaret’s bodies. The rich man who bought them said they would be refurbished into a more desirable form anyways so they got to choose which body they kept. The family eventually decided on Jenna’s body as it was the youngest and healthiest of the three, much to Bradley’s discomfort. It was immensely disconcerting to watch the remote chips being installed into their former bodies - both of them being controlled by a single consciousness simultaneously. The rich man would use all three of his bodies to get ahead in ways not possible for a single-bodied person. The walk home was incredibly awkward, it was difficult for three minds to share control of a single body.

“No, sis. We were running out of time, we would have been out on the streets before we knew it. This was our only safe option, unfortunately. We can’t risk ending up in a debtor’s prison. I think now that we only have one mouth to feed we can start paying back our debts.” He tipped their head down to look down at the curves of his new body he shared, noting the lack of a bulge at the front of their shared dress. It would be strange working the controls at the factory with their small dainty hands, not to mention being 25cm shorter now. At least he wouldn’t have to deal with the asthma his old body had anymore. The poor family was used to sharing, but this was on another level.

I’m sorry kids, you deserve so much better than this. We’ll come around and once Bradley gets promoted a few times we might be able to afford to buy new bodies again! Their mother tried to encourage the kids. All three of them knew that was highly unlikely though, only the rich could afford new bodies - and even fewer could buy extra bodies, which they would have to do if they wanted bodies of their own again. And it’s not like they would have the income of three people, only the income of one from now on; unlike the rich man who bought their bodies who now had three times the productivity of before...
