In my head canon, Kovu starts to fall out of love with Kiara as they seriously rushed their relationship. Not to mention the stress of having to be her prince consort and having to learn everything there is to act the role right after escaping his mother’s tyrannical upbringing started to make him crack. Kiara, on the other hand, was head over heels inlove with Kovu and his distance really hurt her. The two would argue regularly and his avoidance became more frequent after Vitani gave birth to her cubs(and his) but Kiara being oblivious had thought he was scared of the possibility of being a father in the near future.
