Description
Spread 4 of the short booklet entitled "LONG LIVE THE DONG" (pictures of the booklet will be uploaded in Scraps):two swagmen in the outback. This is the largest of the spreads and is 20" x 16", which is twice as big as the next largest spread. Guess which awesome video game character one of these guys was inspired by?
A project exploring the visual language of sexualized male figures. In other words, men are rarely objectified in a way I'd like to see, and at best the frequency of those types of images is grossly lacking in comparison to images of sexualized women. I think all of deviantArt is a good example of this (protip: enter "nude" in the search field and you'll get what I mean).
It's a feminist art project and totally legitimate; I swear! Here, enjoy some pictures of sexy men (for a change).
As a special note for this one: it took me a really long time to illustrate a subject that was sexually appealing, middle-aged, and understated despite the nudity. I like it a lot, so woe betide anyone who dares say "ew, penis" about it.
-------------
Ink, colored pencils, felt pens, and watercolors all compiled in Photoshop (I think of them as analog layers!) with some minimal digital effects.

Agreed. The popular has so many camwhores of naked women (not even in an artistic way) There needs to be more men stuff. Good show

how do you know about swagmen, and waltzing matilda? aside from the question, cool pic, i like the textures within the drawing, and the colours, and your theory is thoroughly agreeable,

Haha, yeah, I read this book a long time ago about a British man visiting Australia... It's called In A Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson. It's the source for most of the things I know about Australia.

I love your style. It's very pin-up-ish and you draw your men very sexy. Reminds me of Peter Chung mixed with Norman Rockwell. You draw very well.

What do you mean by having them "all compiled in Photoshop"? -stupidstupid- And - what paper are you using? I'm unable to find a nice organic-looking brown one anywhere. D:

It means that I drew the ink lines on a piece of bristol paper, and the colored pencils on a transluscent piece of tracing paper, and the typography on another layer of tracing paper, and scanned in the brown paper (French Paper Company, Speckletone in Oatmeal) for the background, and I combined them in Photoshop. Speckletone is hard to find, but I also use Cachet Earthbound Sketchbooks for that organic brown paper.

Not to sound overly fangirlish, but your linework and especially the way you define faces has been a big influence on me lately as I pull myself out of my anime rut. And this is gorgeous and Australia is awesome.

Okay. Now to the serious business.
I am so glad to hear you're doing this project. Lord knows I feel the same way you do about male nudity on dA (or the lack thereof). But it's really the whole issue of the male image that needs to be better understood, and your doing this is a good step forward. You're pressing the issue, and here in deviantART, at that!
Good luck with this project! I hope you keep it up!
