Description Yup, that time again where I try and figure out what exactly I want out of the Hasak species. Here's what I have so far (at least within these set of doodles).

Hasak are kind of like eels. They produce energy as a defense (or attack) mechanism, but recent enlightenment into the modern age leads them to use their powers as batteries for (some of) their machines.

There are large, 6 legged creatures sensitive to the crystals the Hasak mine for. They are also excellent travelers, so they are often used as transport for cargo. These creatures are blind, but navigate by the direction of large crystals. Usually docile, they can be tamed to an extent to follow a particular type of crystal (in this case a dime-a-dozen guide crystal). For those who noticed, I used the base of the Salamander Akrid from Lost Planet 2 on this one.

Birds are rare here, but the one dominant bird (that resembles the ostrich) is used as a quick, single seater mode of transit. They have amazing endurance, given enough food and water, matched by their high speeds upwards of 60mph.

The Hasak's drilling equipment is mostly pneumatic since it's easy to refuel and less flammable than most other energies. This device acts as an impact drill that chips away at the rock face as it bores into it.

The last creature here is a strange bug. It's a delicacy on the planet, but they are hard to capture. These bugs have the interesting ability of bipedal stances and a confusing array of a sort of strobe lighting, which is often enough to deter most curious predators. The bugs are rarely seen unless you search underground. No reason for their existence has been determined. (unless you count strobe light kung-fu or something a reason)

I guess you could say that lol! The energy can be focused and arced to nearby objects. Maybe a little like Infamous, but less so. I think it'll only work over short distances, but it'll pack quite the punch.

So... There could be a very limited number of Hasak that have about 10 times the abilities of others, and use the crystals we mentioned last time to enhance said abilities! They would be some sort of agents or operatives, or maybe mercs?

Potentially. I was a little hesitant about the idea at first, but that particular idea sparked another. I'm thinking that there are those that possess a large amount of energy, but what if there were a protagonist who uses special crystals, gadgets, and what-nots, to pose as one. The special Hasak with enhanced powers will probably be more of a antagonist group with the good ones in low numbers. The poser could make a name for himself from hidden smoke and mirrors (arrays of energy capacitors and other things) under a heavy coat to give the illusion that he is among the good enhanced (He'll be exposed eventually, but we'll get to that later). He'll probably be a bounty hunter in a nod to the Cowboy BeeBop and Oddworld series.

I see, this could lead to some pretty intense situations!
Wait, so you'll be making a separate story arc on them?

Lol, you bet! The story arc; I don't think this'll be an alternate story arc from the Michani. In fact, I'm having them interact with the Hasak seeing as though they have a evolutionary similarity to the Michani.

That is once I get a story going for the Michani anyway

Well we seem to be able to put together quite the backgrounds. And I see others who have some pretty neat ideas! You could use those as an inspiration!

Lol, trust me. There are enough ideas here to make at least 3 different story arcs for the Hasak! It'll be real fun putting all of this together.

I see your doodles, and raise you an idea!
What if the Hassaks serve a more SK Gremlin role? Y'know, building and destroying mechanical objects with key wound bombs...

Ah, so with this I shall meet your ideas with my underlying goal for the Hasak! A society based around the constant composition and destruction of your own tech won't get very far, now will it? The Hasak will be based around a wild western super-economy of exporting and re-seeding crystals that have sparked a frenzy of mining companies, boom-towns, and potentially some off-world competition for said stones (we shall see). It's primary central of the wealthy will be aloft in Capital City where most of the trades are made. Their tech will be simple, yet advanced in function. Explosives might be somewhat rare actually, since they mostly find construction metals and energy laden crystals rather than sulfur and saltpeter. Most of their explosives will be energy-based and probably work a bit different than (some) bombs. I guess I'm just trying to take these guys a little more seriously and really make a believable race with a familiar background.

Now, don't get me wrong. I can't blow an idea like that out of the water. In fact, the similarity between the two species has crossed my mind several times while developing them. I've kind of enjoyed the thought of a parallel version of the Gremlins through the Hasak, but the two are just a bit too far apart to really mesh together.

But then again, who said that stops me from putting my own little Easter Egg into their society?
