Description When I was a young boy

I was honest and I had more self control
If I was tempted I would
Run
Then when I got older I began to lie to get exactly what I wanted when I wanted it
And I wanted it
Now I'm having trouble differentiating between what I want and what I need to make me
Happy
So instead of thinking I just act before I have a chance to contemplate the consequence of
Action

And I will turn off
And I will shut down
Burying the voices of my conscience hitting ground
And I will turn off
And I will shut down
The chemicals are restless in my head

'Cause I lie
Not because I want to
But I seem to need to all the time (need to all the time)
Yeah I lie
And I don't even know it
Maybe this is all a part of my
Flawed design

As much as I wanted to draw something more complex for this show, but I decided to check in with myself and, instead, whipped together something that I felt quickly summarized the "chapters" of the protagonist Bojack. To put the show's critical acclaim of its emotional maturity into perspective, I had to take a year-long break between the 5th and 6th (last) season because I felt I had to be in a better place to handle the story. 'Bojack Horseman' is a show that doesn't appear all that interesting at first glance because it takes time getting used to the style and the plot set-up... but I'm VERY glad that I got around to finishing this damn roller coaster of a character journey!

There's SO much that could be said on the thematic challenges and character development, but I don't want to go into spoiler territory about the twists and turns. What I will say is that this is one of the better "adult" animation series that I have ever seen for some of the tropes it subverted and how well-written the morally ambigious and flawed characters were in contrast to its biting, satirical sense of humour. I would describe Bojack as an interesting, but frustrating asshole who is placed into a set-up where the struggle is posed of whether someone who has been "bad" and unhealthy for so long can truly change for the better or continue down a downward spiral. I will give the show credit for bringing a lot of empathy and hard-hitting discussion on very important topics like substance abuse, self-love vs. self-hatred, accountability, intimacy, mental illness, generational trauma, and more. I'm not going to lie, there were a few moments that emotionally punched me in the gut and remain seared into my mind.

I likely will create some more art for this show considering its impact on me, so keep an eye out if you're interested in that.
