Why 3 circle skirts? and are they all sewn together at the waistband and each layer has horsehair?

Oh I guess they're sewn on side seams to make a super wide skirt?

I know your tutorial is the regular way to use horsehair. However, I am making a Latin American dance outfit and I want to use the horsehair as a visible trim on 3 layers of circle skirts. What do you think would be the best way to apply the horsehair and which side of the horsehair would be attached to the skirt.

Hi I love this skirt, but I have a question, when you sew the horse hair to the bottom of the skirt, are you sewing it to the 1 skirt at a time or all 3 skirts at one time?

Hello! ^^ I've been looking up about horsehair braid and what I've found seems to have said that it should be one skirt at a time.

Hi! Do you know if this would be able to be made about knee-length, and plus-sized? How would I go about doing that if it was possible?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SkyeAnnabellaLeeRay In reply to KierstinHun [2015-07-05 14:37:48 +0000 UTC]

It's possible! I'd recommend doing it in half-skirts and sewing those together at the sides though, to be honest. :0

This is wonderful! I'm wondering what kind of fabric you used? And if I wanted to use this method for a longer skirt (the finish should be about knee-length), would I need to use more or thicker braid than what you used?Β

Would crinoline/stiff tulle also work? Apparently horsehair braid is expensive (like around $50 expensive at joann's??) and I'm looking for an alternative. :u

At my local Joann's, it's literally dollars a yard.

For some reason it's listed as $50 online. Hmm. :S

Miss-Marquin In reply to SkyeAnnabellaLeeRay [2015-08-04 03:23:11 +0000 UTC]

Most likely for an entire spool of it. It's typically about $2-3 a yard.

Hi! Of all things, I'm looking for a dress/skirt to make for my TRON themed prom, and I needed something stiff enough to attach my EL wire to. THIS IS GREAT. You look to be about my size, from the cosplay pictures (probably taller), so I was wondering about how long you made the skirt before wiring it, and how many yards of fabric and crinoline that you ended up using? Trying to gauge out the shopping needing to be done here. ;3 Thanks so much!

This is an absolutely stellar result, but do you know whether it would work on longer skirts? One of the costumes I have my eye on has a floor-length circular skirt and while it's not ruffled, it does have some body and poof. If you didn't gather the waist hem, would the horse hair be strong enough to keep a nice circular hem?

I'm referring to this costume: sta.sh/01jldrheyt2u
I have a floor-length petticoat but I don't think I like the material and the hoop is also broken so it's not a perfect circle, so I'm just looking for alternatives here.

Gosh, I kind of ended up asking you a totally different question. :S Sorry!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SkyeAnnabellaLeeRay In reply to Electrosa [2015-02-17 05:24:28 +0000 UTC]

It can work on longer skirts, yes! It's usually used for longer than knee length skirts! The gathering of the waist hem is to make it look more like a circle skirt, and I'm not sure if it does much besides make the horse hair braid super wavy-looking. :0

For a skirt like this, yes. Unless thick wire can do the same thing. For a regular circle skirt with gathering? Not really.

You might want to mention that the horse hair is first sewn to the right side of the skirt, and you probably mean yoke instead of yolk

firecloak [2014-04-11 21:58:59 +0000 UTC]

Regarding step 7, I don't understand the part where you fold the fabric inwards. Are you folding the fabric and the horse hair both or just the fabric? It looks like you're sewing the edge of the skirt to the horse hair in the previous picture and that you wouldn't have enough of the ends of the skirt to fold inwards twice.

FashionFable [2014-04-06 07:29:22 +0000 UTC]

Can this be done with a single skirt or do you need to do multiples? I don't think I have enough fabric for what I'm doing and really don't want to get more since it's a salvage project. Took an ugly bridesmaid dress and am turning it into a Sailor Jupiter outfit (I'll buy you a green dress but not a real green dress, that's cruel - If I had a million dollars, The Barenaked Ladies)

I'd just like to say this tutorial is amazing and thank you so much for posting it! And also, um, well I know you use your waist measurement for the yoke, but how did you decide how big to make the inside of the skirt to figure in the amount of gathering you did? Cause if you just made the skirt for your waist, gathering it would make it too small so did you just like double the inner circumference? Sorry if I asked a dumb question and thank you so much for this tutorial!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

rayxofxsunshine In reply to WrathOfCon [2014-08-18 21:21:23 +0000 UTC]

Hopefully you've figured this out, but just in case (or for any others looking for the answer), what you want to do is sew them together on the sides, creating one GIANT skirt/tube/circle. Imagine where you'd normally add the zipper or whatever closure in the back - that's where you want to sew them together like panels. She mentioned hers was 16" for the top of each, so in this case, she would have 48" around the top, and whatever the bottom edge measures x 3. Β When you gather it together at the top, you'll condense it so it's not quite as big around the waist, and use what's called a yoke or basically a waistband to keep it in place. Hopefully that makes sense!
