The process is rather complicated and involves several pieces of software that I doubt you have. I draw the vague outline on an equirectangular projection map, use Gprojector to convert that to a Robinson projection, use Photoshop to overlay the image on the worlda sea basemap, and then go through the coasts and make islands, lakes and rivers with MS Paint.

Hmm, what would I need to make a simpler flat map?
I think a flat one would be enough for me.

Microsoft Paint, Paint.NET or GIMP are all fine for maps and flags, you do not need all of that.
