Software:
Microsoft Windows 8.1 retail disks (with both 32-bit and 64-bit)
Putting it together was quite a fun challenge, not to mention hard on my back, and it took me about four hours (starting at 2:30pm EST on Saturday) to put it all together. Here's the story:
First I turned on my Xbox 360 YouTube channel and played the Newegg instruction video. After opening my motherboard and putting it on the box, I carefully removed the plastic cover protecting the pins... but my thumb accidentally touched a couple pins!!! O_O I was afraid I bent them outta place! They looked okay, but my heart was pounding. No time to think about it, I carefully and cautiously placed the processor in the motherboard. I gently gave it a tap and it slid right in perfectly, then I closed the locking arms. Next I took out my four sticks of RAM and placed them in four of the eight slots (checking the manual to find out which ones they go in.) Finally, I attached the case speaker to the motherboard. Now for inside the case, I screwed in the power supply with the intake fan down. Took me some struggling but once I got the first screw it the rest was easy. Next, I took out the motherboard standoffs and screwed them into the case in the correct spots. Then I removed the case's top fan because I was going to put my CPU cooler there. After that I snapped the input-output shield in the back and then placed the motherboard in there. After finding the right screws to secure the motherboard (the first ones wouldn't go in because they were too small) I secured all 9 mounting points. Then I installed the CPU cooler. First I attached the cooler to the top of the case, added in the four mounts on the motherboard (since it already had a backplate) and after some struggling I placed the pump on the CPU and screwed them into place. I struggled a but attaching the fan headers and the USB link to the pump (had to unscrew the pump once to help and screwed it back in). Then I attached the two fans onto the cooler on the top of the case (pointed outward as an exhaust.) Next I got my power cables attacked, the motherboard power, the CPU power, the water pump power, the USB link from the power supply to the motherboard, and one PCIe connector for when I plugged in my graphics card last. I plugged in my monitor, turned it on, plugged in the HDMI cable, plugged in the power supply... and I held my breath. I was worried I bent those pins and it all wouldn't work. I pressed the motherboard power button... and waited... waited... waited...
BEEP!
YES! That little beep coming from the little speaker means everything worked! The monitor displayed the ASUS logo and everything! Everything was working! Now to move on!
After turning it all off, I removed the graphics card for extra space. First thing I did was snapped in my three drives, my SSD, my HDD, and my Blu-Ray drive. Even though they were locked in automatically, I bolted them in anyway. Now for all the cables. First I plugged in all the data cables from the drives into the motherboard as well as the one eSATA dock in the front of the case. I struggled a bit for the power connectors because they were all just barely short, but I made some adjustments to prevent tangling and made them fit well. Then I used the ASUS Q-connector to plug in all the case switches. Sadly, since my two USB headers were occupied by the power supply and CPU cooler, I couldn't use my front-panel USB headers (I'll buy an extender someday) and the motherboard I have doesn't have FireWire so I had nothing to plug my IEEE header into, but I'll get a card for that because that's important to me. Next I plugged in all the case fans into the motherboard since I didn't have a fan controller. Now that I was done with the cables, I plugged in my video card again, plugged in my monitor HDMI cable, and pressed the case power switch... and waited... waited... waited...
BEEP!
Everything worked together well! After that I tied down all the lose cables and attached the two side panels on the case. It was heavy but I managed to carry it to my desk. Problem, the little slot for computer towers on my desk was too small, so instead I placed it on the floor. Since it was on the floor, I decided to screw in the casters on the feet. I placed my monitor on my desk, my speakers with sub-woofer, my scanner, and my keyboard/mouse combo. Next, I unplugged the data cable from my 4TB drive because I want to install my OS on the SSD. After plugging everything in, I booted up the computer and went into the EFI BIOS. I set the boot-priority (with the hyper-sensitive mouse) to the Blu-Ray drive. I slid my disc with Windows 8.1 64-bit in the drive and rebooted the computer. I went through the on-screen instructions and it installed. When it booted back up, I was BACK at the same screen! I did it again, but then I was BACK at the same screen again. I figured out the problem. After deleting and reinstalling Windows one more time, I quickly went into the boot-drive and switched the boot-priority to the SSD. That worked. Now I was looking at Windows 8.1 for the very first time! Before starting all this, I went to my laptop and used my external hard drive to download all the drivers (chipset, LAN, audio, and USB 3.0 drivers, as well as the NVidia driver) and I installed them all onto my new computer. Once that was done and I was connected to the Internet, I went to my McAfee subscription and downloaded my anti-virus software, McAfee firewall, virus scanner, and SiteAdvisor. Then I turned off my computer, re-plugged my data-cable to my 4TB HDD, booted it back up, and activated that hard drive for my backups. Finally, I installed my scanner. And, of course, I put Sonic on my wallpaper!
I'm still far from done from finishing my computer. Hardware-wise, I need an IEEE FireWire card and a USB 2.0 extender just to make use of the ports in the front of the case. Software-wise, I'm still downloading and installing all of my programs, such as Paint Shop Pro, 3ds Max, Unreal, Firefox, BitTorrent, Sony Vegas, Adobe After Effects, Flash Player, Adobe Acrobat, CyberLink PowerDVD to play DVD's and Blu-Rays, and so on. It'll never be finished. I plan to use multiple graphics and add more hard drives for more space, not to mention a joystick/throttle/pedals in the future for flight sim gaming.
But, until then... I love my new computer!
