this is a great tutorial...but one question..that i face using this technique myself...smudge tool..when i draw in large canvas..sometimes smudge tool works slow...or hangs the system...so is there any alternative to that?

Okay, I am totally new to photoshop and I was wondering... How do you get your brushes to come out so smooth and not pixely?

I'm pretty new to photoshop too ^^ Here are a few thoughts of mine, though!
Make sure your canvas isn't zoomed over 100%. Check what brush you're using, too. It shouldn't be pixely or blurry if its a hard rounded brush. Also, if you're using a custom brush, like for foliage or blood or whatever, sometimes those have set sizes. Bigger sizes will make the brush blurry.
