Description
The Viamar Class Heavy Defense monitor is a heavily armed, heavily armored, slow pig of a warship. It is not a large vessel, being on the large size of the light warship category, which generally makes it smaller than cruisers. But it is very heavily armed, carrying eight 150 cm guns, and a strong secondary battery to back it up. It is sometimes equipped with a few missile launchers in the rear superstructure, however these missile modules carry long range anti fighter defense missiles only, as the ship lacks the fire control sensors for long range antiship missiles. The Viamar is generally used in defensive operations, defending smaller colonies, patrolling interstellar planets, and protecting commerce, as its heavy frontal armor and big guns means it can easily send off most cruisers and raiders much larger than itself, although battlecruisers and some large cruisers are capable of overpowering them. When operating alongside a squadron of missile carrying fast attack craft, this monitor makes an excellent deterrent while also being an inexpensive vessel to acquire and operate. Groups fo them can even threaten capital ships if they manage to catch them in a crossfire.
It is generally a short ranged ship however, it doesn't have a large fuel load for long distance voyages. Its protection system is also entirely concentrated on the frontal arc, so it is vulnerable to getting flanked or to strike craft attack. These weaknesses are mitigated by the fact that it is a defensive vessel, frequently operating with fighter cover, and defensive deployments limits the risk of getting flanked.
For the most part, the real inspiration for this ship comes from pre-dreadnought battleships and monitors.

Yeah, I try to keep ships with a similar roles using similar hull designs, as many real world militaries do. For example all battleships within the Akurian Starfleet use a common base hull design that is either upscale or downscale for its expected role and modified accordingly. Monitors will use a further downscale battleship hulls.
Superstructures are actually a detachable module that can be removed easily, either for different mission requirements, or for easy repair, hence why superstructures are basically the same from one ship to the next. Though I will point out that the command tower is not a command tower in the traditional sense. Rather it's a navigation bridge and observation deck typically only used in docking manuvers and when using jump gate lines. It and the entire superstructure is to be entirely unoccupied when in combat, and the main command center is buried deep inside the ship.

Stick in orbit over a major base to provide extra coverage.

Yeah, That's one role it can do.
