I put on a pair of new glassesAnd am pulled back in sudden shock.
Everything around me seemed different
In a way I know not.
I have just grown 5 inches taller.
The ground around me
Looks further away than it did 10 minutes ago.
And my shoes look smaller
Than it did before.
I have just grown 5 inches taller.
I look up and watch my family walk away
I try to run after them.
“No! Wait for me!”
But the concrete swirls and instead
I walk dizzy circles
With blurred vision.
I have just grown 5 inches taller.
Sitting down by myself
I yank off those new glasses
And the earth comes rushing back up towards me.
I am now clutching the familiar closeness
Not wanting to let go
And wishing to forever stay short.
But my parents say “No!”
And make me wear the new spectacles.
I stumble through the new
And am made to throw out the old
Blurry unfamiliarity clouds the sight…
I have just grown 5 inches taller.
