Description
Yeah, yeah, I know it's sketchy, but I just drew this and HAD to upload it.So, this is my idea of what Anubis in the modern century. My style has changed slightly, mostly in the eyes, ears, and lower lip.
What's with the shirt? Fashion changes every couple of months or so, so I figured that at some point, some fashion guru would say, "Hey... here's an idea - wide collars!"
You might also notice that the shoes are a little different too; they're more streamlined, and instead of shoelaces there's a zipper device instead. It looks odd, but it's a time saver.
The full body view is okay. From the waist up, he's a handsome fella.
The face view is okay. For some reason, I both love it and hate it, probably for different reasons.
So, let me know what you think.

I kinda think that since he's the death guy & all, that he would look more...dark. Maybe Goth, even.

LOL! I've never seen these particular gods described in this way but I like it!
Personally I think Thoth would be more of a 'know it all'.
In my stories he's the sort of guy who likes to claim he knows more than anyone else and bores people with his knowledge. And he also loves using long words to baffle others...I call him the 'Geek with a Beak'
Sorry, went off at a tangent there. I think your interpretation of Anubis is cute! He's very handsome, I must say.

Thanks!
Most of what I've discovered about the personalities of the Egyptian gods comes from, "Daily Life of the Egyptian Gods." I believe it was page 88 or 89, I'm not sure. I don't have the book with me, but I can have it by tomorrow.
Yeah, Thoth is a know-it-all. He loves to use long, complicated, sometimes flowery words... he loves the sound of his own voice, and boy does that make him look conceited. You might have heard this myth - Isis was concerned because baby Horus was sick, so she called Thoth to diagnose him. But it took so long for him to get to the point, Isis finally screamed, "How wise are your words, but how slow are your decisions!" He'd make a good beaurecrat.
I'd love to do more, and I probably will. I've always had the ideas... Anubis was just my favorite, and I had to do him first.

Oh, forgot to mention this! Those aren't his work clothes!
His work clothes are generally "suit and tie" attire, being the Cheif Mortician. He oversees the preservation of the bodies presented to him, and additionally records the deaths within Egyptian territory.

Ok, so I haven't learned anything about Egypt since 10th grade. Cut me some slack!

I'm sorry. I started doing my research in 10th grade, but I've been refreshing myself since then. It's great material for a fiction series, and yet no one's ever expounded on it...
Guess I'll have to do it!

It depends on how you view his personality. When developing characters from mythologies, I try to use as much of the information available as possible, but unfortunately there's not a whole lot of myths about Anubis, and the ones we have don't describe his personality very well. This is opposed to deities such as Ra (stubborn), Thoth (opinionated), and Isis (drama queen).
What I have found is an excerpt from the Book of the Dead, describing Anubis and his duties as Guardian of the Necropolis (ie - "the dead"). Death is always a somber issue, so the hint is given that Anubis (rather than being harsh and cruel, as movies and TV generally depict him) is actually a very compassionate god.
Of course, this also suggests that Anubis is probably not cold and dark, and probably not Goth either. "Cold and dark" do not = "compassionate" (usually). It might suggest that he's the type of character to suffer from depression, which would be an interesting plot device. However, he's proven to be a helpful and understanding companion. That doesn't sound like Goth to me.
Also... I've never seen a "Goth" outside of a high school setting. The "Goth" character is generally reserved for a younger person... and Anubis may be younger than a lot of the Egyptian pantheon members, but he's no spring chicken. He's got a daughter, and to be honest, she'd probably be closer to the "Goth" character than he is... even though she shares a similar personality as her father.
...
And yet, because I don't take these characters too seriously, I have no problems with "tweaking" a character trait or two.
So this Anubis is not the dark, depressing "woe is me" type. He's still fairly young, so he goes out with friends and even dates. However, I will say this - he is a lot more mature than many of the "gods" in his extended family. He has a deep understanding of mortality, life, and death. His life hasn't been a cakewalk either... but no one should spend their entire lives worrying about the past, or even current situations. He's got a lot of problems to deal with, that's certainly true... but he's got to have some reason for living, right?
