This video of Vilppu, the Disney Master Artist and Instructor, is very long and has a wide variety of examples. You might want to watch it a little at a time.

His method is ACTION (i.e. rhythm/gesture) -> VOLUME -> DETAIL.  As you can see, he's NOT very neat.  Haha.  www.youtube.com/watch?v=ef4Nmq…  With this one you just did today, you're already on your way.  Just shift the emphasis from the end to the beginning - searching for the rhythm in the gesture, then massing, or fleshing out the volumes.  Finally, treating laying in the contour as a matter of detailing.

Note, Vilppu often confuses the term contour with cross-contour.  In his method, cross-contouring (i.e. crossing the surface of the form between outlines) is the vital part of defining the volumes and contouring (i.e. drawing the final outlines) is part of detailing.

Well this is much freer and bolder.  Still, it's drawing with outlines, although now the expression of form volume is reinforced by the use of shade and tone.  You're in the water, but still clinging to the edge of the pool.

Go all the way out.  Do a core drawing.  I have a video of Glenn Vilppu doing one.  I will try to find it.  If not, I'll google up an example for you of how to draw from the core.  It's absolutely the messiest kind of drawing, because the forms are massed and modeled with smudge tones - no outlines! Not until the very end.  hehe.  You'll love/hate it!
