Description
the smell of oranges reminds me of my sisterdigging her thumb into its flesh
eyes wild with excitement
as she sees she can peel its skin
and that it is sweet and slightly sour
and she is proud her small hands reap rewards
as i too smile
it is wonderful
how food reminds you of what love and life is
as i reach for my own and peel it much more elegantly
i tell my sister it is all about experience
as i am older
and i do not tell her if the orange will grow more sour or sweet
or that there are other oranges like clementines or kumquats
for now we sit by the table
and breathe

Did you think something was wrong with how I displayed my poetry?

No, that was something that happened to me in real life that made no sense.Β Someone was eating an orange and someone else asked if it was a limeΒ It was weird because I don't recall that person being colorblind or anything.

this is great, we often forget to appreciate the ordinary moments.

Definitely not a hodgepodge, in my opinion! I think this is a beautifully captured moment. The contemporary style here has a simplicity, which I think works in well with your final few lines/main idea. It possess power and sweet smiles.
I would like to ask about line 4. Did you mean "peel its skin?"

You're welcome! I hope it didn't come across as petty or anything; I just see someone's work and I think "they must have spent a while on this" and I just want it to be read as smoothly as possible so other people can truly appreciate the talent and content.Β

What a beautiful image that painted in my mind's eye. I also have to admit that I find kumquat to be a hilarious word, even if it is childish of me.Β
And goodness, there are 'instagram poets' now?Β

I think that many poets wonder if their poems are but a hodgepodge of pretty words, we are much too hard on ourselves. Lovely poem!

I adore this poem. The parallels and how you narrate a single scene so well.
