This happened to me today. On Saturday, I won in the Regional competition for History fair (I did my project on HeLa cells) and today was the first day of school after that. All my teachers congratulated me, and when I was in the Guidance office, a lovely lady was startled to realize how I said I didn't believe in IQ scores--and my mom never let me know my IQ. Before this point, no one really took me seriously--and all of a sudden I'm well liked for a 1st place in the Individual Exhibit category. It was interesting and a tad odd to say the least!

I love the story behind the HeLa cells.
But anyways, lovely piece, and it's very true, how you use it is just as important, if not more important, than what you're given.

You know of it? Not many people do except for those planning to be in the medical field or like to read nonfiction or science books.

Thank you! I'm glad I found another person how understands the piece.

I read "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" in 10th grade, so I know of it, but I'm not super-knowledgeable on the topic you probably know more than I do. I think her family should have been given compensation, or at the very least, recognition for her cells' contribution to medicine.

My dad is a genius (as in just-short-of-Mensa genius) but he lived his entire childhood believing he was stupid, so he never tried in school until after he joined the army. It goes to show that it's really about what you do with what you're given. There are countless people who are considered to be "dumb" but have made amazing contributions to the world. The moral is, make the best of what you've got.

Oh yes! That book. I loved that book until I got a hold of a member of the Lacks family that wasn't under contract that told me all the exaggerations and the means of which she got the information. I could tell you a lot about it--but you probably aren't interested!

Oh wow. My dad's a Captain in the Navy, he's pretty smart, but he always wanted to go military to see the world, not due to low self esteem or anything. If not a military man, my dad would've probably been a historian.

Oh no I'm definitely interested! I want to see every side of the story, not just the one that's publicised

Kidding about what? I don't know if you just think typing jk is something you automatcially do, but I assume it's becasue your kidding about the context of your senctence? That it, your entire comment is a joke? Sorry if I am picking on you but still That would instiuate that you don't think great minds think alike, in which case your entire comment was just a repeat of what i said but more spread out and provable from a source.

Ahem Short version: They sure do.

Insert facepalm here.

I just got done with a philosophy class, so that was good practice XD

What i meant was, your kidding was not intended toward the statment but rather to the comment in its entirety.

Philosophy is weird like that.

It's not about what you know or how much, it's how you use it that matters.

Exactly! I'm glad someone understands. My school is so warped about rating and accomplishments, they forget what the goal's supposed to be.

Everyone forgets about all your "accomplishments" really quickly anyway. The goal is supposed to be to prepare us for the futute. Right? Happy to hear someone agrees lol.

Exactly. If anything, the important things about accomplishments are the experience and skill you obtain from them.
