How do you decide where the hair separates and where loose strands of hair come out?

When it comes to seperations in drawn hair, it is left to the artist to decide placement. Usually, strands are added here-and-there to give a more natural feel and flow to the hair without creating a new focal point. The purpose of hair is to the highlight the face. Much like photography, even art attempts to draw attention into the same areas with both lighting and placement.
The appearance of loose strands can also be an idication of the lighting in said piece. Artists and 'sketch animators' often place that single hair to remind them of the lighting of the scene or the movement of the hair.

Putting effort into 'good hair' can be a dreary experiance. I've gone back and forth between cartoon / anime to realism. And hair also makes me cry in realism.

This is the one I bought for my digital art, and I really like it. I would recommend getting a surface protector for it though (you can find it in the "customers who bought this also bought..." section).

Sorry for my petition, but you can make a tutorial of short hair? I mean, a hair like Roxas from Kingdom hearts 2 (o more short), for exemple. Because I don't know how to paint this hair because is extremely complicated to make te lights and shadows.
