I rarely upload sketches/studies, but I figured it's been long enough, and some people might be interested in seeing more of my practice junk from behind the scenes, haha.Reference from Pixabay. Total time: 1 hour. Used Photoshop.

For face shapes: Doing simple sketch studies, and a lot of them, using photo or real life references is the best way. Try to keep things simplistic and avoid going over detailed. Don't aim for accuracy, instead, aim for drawing a LOT. www.deviantart.com/browse/all/… Nice place to start.
Another thing you can do is draw random geometric shapes and try to add faces on them. They won't be realistic, but it might help you look at things differently and pay more attention to people's varying facial shapes.

For shading: value studies, which is basically greyscale drawings. Forget about color, look at the world in black and white. Look at where light comes from, where it falls, and what it causes on different shapes. (The value and form videos in the tutorial series above might help more here.)
