Description
A Green Turaco, also known as a Guinea Turaco, (Tauraco persa) from the Birds of Eden free-to-roam open air sanctuary. In South Africa, where this was taken, Turacos are often known as Louries. To make matters worse, some people spell it lourie and some loerie lourie... Anyway, its a Green Turaco and thats thatWhile i dont know about this bird in particular, Birds of Eden take birds that were once pets and let them live as free and wild as possible. Unfortunately being ex-pets means they need to be fed but every effort is made for it to be a varied and balanced choice, not just sunflowerseeds all day every day. Many different species live here, protected from predators and have the space they need if they want to escape from the human visitors (who follow strict walkways through the trees).

I'm in love with Turacos, I always love it when a photo of one pops up on DA. Fantastic shot.

I love nearly all the the African animals and birds i've been lucky enough to see. Of these the Turaco's head plume and colours are really special. I particulary like the Grey one actually. Sounds boring but actually its a really nice colour, never managed to get a good photo of one of those myself though. The Grey Go-Away-Bird, Lourie, Turaco or whatever

I have to agree with you on the go-away-bird, they're very pretty creatures, and very interesting to watch as well. They have quite a few different sorts of turaco at my local bird park and I always spend ages watching them.

what an amazing bird. I particularly enjoy that the bird is almost the same shade as the blurred background. But what really makes this shot special is the detail you captured on this bird.
The crazy red skin around its eyes that has such a unique texture...the texture of the feathrs, the drop of water at the end of its little beak. Very cool.

Thank you for giving me the details like this. It is very helpful to hear. I enjoy close up animal & bird photography but having never had lessons its really great to get such specific feedback about what you find works well. Thank you for taking the time

awesome! I'm glad i'm of some help!
I was thinking about this picture for a while after seeing it and leaving this comment and realized that I didn't even take into consideration the skill that goes into capturing such a detailed picture of a bird, since they tend to be such...movement filled creatures.

As much as i would love to claim skill, two things actually have more impact, luck combined with sheer amount of pictures i can take on a single card.
Luck means the bird sat still long enough for me to notice, line up, not have (s)he move away.
Also, when on holiday i take a laptop with me, meaning that every day i can take an entire flash card of shots if i want to. If you saw how many shots i had, and had deleted, of badly focused birds
I dont mean to sound unappreciate, so thank you! Just remember a lot of luck comes into these

You're welcome. I didn't go into great detail, because there is simply nothing left to say. It is perfect in every way!

Beautiful bird indeed, there a whole bunch of similar birds to this one. You may already know but try searching for a Knysna Lourie, alas i dont have a picture myself. I've seen them but never managed a photo, they are similar to this but with bonus bits of different colours.
I'm glad you enjoyed my picture though! I made a 'cutout' / photomanipulation / whatever using this which personally i rather like, if you'd like to check it out [link]
