For those of you that don't know the full 'inspiration/story' behind this manip, in the past I have viewed the snake as an opposing force to the horse. And as for the shipwreck, do with it what you will. It could be the horse's owner was once among that ship, or just that the horse was there when the ship sunk. ;D
