Emi: Chapter 1 ~The Wave

I remember the water rising over our heads, towering over even the tallest skyscrapers. Paradise, the man-made artificial beach's waters moved slowly but surely towards us and before I knew it, people were scattering and running in the opposite direction of the enourmous tidal wave. My daughter, Alice, was next to me. I strongly grasped her hand and together we joined the sea of people.

        Trying to get away was one of the biggest challenges of my life. It was as if I was running through a thick I was running through a thick forest of a thousand trees of a thousand limbs. We had to dodge the swinging arms of the people, watch the small children, avoid beach towels and beach toys. The exit was just too far away it felt like.
I'm still running and never looking back,"Alice, don't look back. Just hang on to me." I reassured her that I was with her, trying to speak in a calm voice. I never looked back and I never looked down. Just the door up ahead was my target. I began to run faster, pushing and shoving. I'm still holding on to Alice.

        Crash! The water sounded behind me like thunder. "Don't look back, Alice," I yelled. It was coming. And, I never looked down to see Alice. She had to be afraid and I needed to focus on the door ahead. The small grey door that was soon covered with people trying to live. So, I needed to forced my way through faster and I squeezed Alice's hand harder. The sanctuary was close,"We're almost there, sweetheart!" The one metal door was just so near. Just a little bit more. Panting harder and harder with each step I took. I reached out.

        The door was closing and the crowd was so thick. I could feel the wave coming and gaining on us. So, I grabbed with both hands and climbed those people that were in my way. They cursed and tried to pull me down. I just continued to claw my way through. "Hey, lady, get off me," on yelled," Ouch," another complained.

        But, I did make it in, finally. And right when my feet hit the ground the doors shut, closed and locked. The fight for our lives is over but those people are going to die outside. "Sad," I said,"but we made it in, Alice."

No reply.

        I looked down next to me. "Alice?"

No Alice.

        I looked behind me and around me,"Alice!"

No Alice.

        My chest started to pain me. "Alice," I called again but no one answered just people cursing at me. I turned around to see a large man with a scruffy beard frowning at me. "Have you seen a little girl with long black hair and a little silver bow on her head," I asked. The man replied with a heavy cracking voice,"No, I haven't woman." He spit on the ground. Then, I stared at him blankly and so did the man.

        Then it clicked. Immediateley, I clawed my way through the people in the direction of the door. "Alice," I panted," where are you!" I pushed and shoved.

        Blinded by tunnel vision, I continued to fight. I didn't care about anything or anyone. My Alice is around here somewhere. I know she is. There's no way that she got left behind. I held on to her, I know I did.

        "Alice," I cried,"daughter, please answer!" I screamed, my emotions taking over my mind and body. And I still fought, digging deeper, harder, stronger through everyone. "Please, let me through.

        As I dug deeper and further, there still was no Alice. "Help," someone called behind me. I was panicking. I need to open that door, I thought.

        And I could feel people pulling and grabbing on to me, hanging on to me, trying to stop me. "No, I screamed,"Let me go!" I screamed, grunted, cried out. Never did I turn around to see who they were that was pulling me. I didn't care. Then, there was a pinch in my leg.

        Which leg was it, I can't remember but the world around me slowing. "Alice, I'll find you." It all went black.
