Description An illustration I did for the heck of it a few years ago - finally got it scanned in, and stitched back together in Photoshop. Mostly an excuse for me to experiment with shading techniques. This was all done from imagination (no reference pics - it's purely the product of my fevered imagination) in inks - brushes and pens. Took a few hours - I honestly don't remember how many.

Some will point out that the bagpipes don't quite look right. In my defense, modern bagpipes have only existed in their current form for a couple of hundred years. Before that, there were all kinds of variations, so these are at least...plausible.

Ahh, Good defence on the preportion of the pipes... something Mel Gibson didnt think about in Braveheart..... Actualy Bagpipes were uncommon in Scotland during the Scottish Wars of Independance.... They were introduced in the 15th and 16th century. But even though they are not like todays... would you not agree the Tastles should be connecting at the top of the drones?
And the only other thing that I would notice would be the way the Legs look, I believe they are a touch to far apart. and to be proportional to the socks the Kilt should also be a touch longer. or the socks should be higher.

I play the pipes and found this really interesting. Its really nice. Could have worked on a sporan a bit.

Excelent!

Thanks for the comment. This was drawn when my interest in Scottish history was first being fed, and so some details - such as a good idea of a 16th/17th century sporran - are heavy on conjecture on my part.

Bear this in mind with the socks as well, as they're not a modern set of kilt hose, they're more of a leg wrapping that appealed to me aesthetically, whether accurate or not. Just be glad I knew enough not to stick a sgian dhu in the top of one...that came much, much later.

As to the legs issue, I generally draw the basic skeletal structure before committing to fleshing a figure out, so it may be all the folds and wrinkles of the kilt and shirt playing tricks with your eyes. Everything should connect properly under there, but I ain't peeking...
