Description oy, my awful posture is ruining it.
this was my final project in the jewelry class...the rings are steel and the back part is etched aluminum. I used Drano to etch the metal with asphaltum as a resist, and the painted it with regular old acrylic inks.
i wish i could wear this grocery shopping.

ETA. Oh wow, a DD...*blushes* Thanks so much!
Since people keep asking...
It weighs about 2 lb, and took around 36 hours to fabricate.

Wow! This is amazing! It is beautiful!

There aren't many pieces that place the focal point on the back, and I really like that effect. It would look gorgeous with a backless gown.

You're so awesome. Congrats so much!!

I do love how it looks like wings and sky, or water. I think that means you accomplished your objective. P

The brushmarks and stuff are really nice, too. So neat!

aaawww, thanks for commenting!
the funny thing is, the original idea came from a picture of a skyscraper XD i didn't get the idea to etch and paint it for more of a water effect til weeks after i had done the concept sketches, when a visiting artist showed us these awesome spun etched bowls she had made. It looked like she had just loaded up molted metal on a paintbrush and just painted them into existence from nothing. if i had had more time, i'd've liked to do a more extreme job of the etching, so it's not so blocky at the edges and stuff.

ganimyde In reply to Sarapsys [2010-01-08 20:53:23 +0000 UTC]

That might be really interesting to see. I can't believe that there's paint over the top of the metal, too.

Looking at it again, I think that the front of the piece really makes the work classy and complete. I really like the curves you've got in the chain mail. I don't know how you did it, but the neckline (in both front and back) is fantastic. The front is so elegant. The diamond shape is really unexpected, but really makes the look. ^__^

Sarapsys In reply to ganimyde [2010-01-11 23:27:58 +0000 UTC]

The front curve is actually amazingly easy, and the result of not knowing how to do square joins XD I merged two rectangular pieces at one corner, and just made a chain to connect the other two corners.

Thanks! ^^ Next time you come over I'll show it to you if you want--the silly thing is hanging in my closet *rolls eyes*

Such a cool, sophisticated look from actually because of being a novice! XD I love things like that! :3 That just proves that you don't have to be super practiced to get a worthwhile result at something. :3

I'd love to see it! Kinda feels like seeing a museum piece. But I might ooh and ahh enough to be annoying.

I would love to see this piece in motion!
It's really gorgeous! I'd love to see a vid of it as you walk! I bet it would look beautiful with some sort of sleeveless or shoulder sleeved gown or robe of some kind with an open back that echos the design of this accessory. It seems like it might move a around a bit so if you wore that kind of dress with it you'd probably want to counter anchor it to a portion of the dress and have it detachable. And of course you'd probably custom make the dress to go with it as well if you ever did. It's really a lovely piece!

wow... How long did this take?! That's amazing! I have a friend who would kill to learn how to make something like that!

Why don't you wear it grocery shopping? You could make a new fashion statement! ;D

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sarapsys In reply to Ashriel-kid-of-Voldy [2009-01-19 01:30:48 +0000 UTC]

about 36 hours.
It wasn't hard...just tedious. If you know how to do euro 4-in-1, which you can find tutorials for on the net, and have access to a metal sheer, drill press, and fume hood, the rest is pretty straightforward.
er...i'm not really a statement-making person, lol. it might be fun though

Ashriel-kid-of-Voldy In reply to Sarapsys [2009-01-20 16:24:02 +0000 UTC]

I've never done any metal working stuff, so it just seems really amazing. I'd love to learn how though.

Yeah, neither am I, I guess. I'm more of a "let life go on" sort of person.^_^ What happens happens. (Hey, now I sound all nostalgic!)

Great job in any case.

wowww gorgeous. plz dont tell me u made every single one of those rings from scratch?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sarapsys In reply to casualty-of-anime [2009-01-19 01:32:14 +0000 UTC]

errrm, well i don't know what you mean by from scratch. It started out as a spool of wire like you might get at any farm or hardware shop, I wound it on my friend's coiler, and then I clipped the rings by hand, I guess. Prebought rings are a lot more expensive than fencing wire lol.

casualty-of-anime In reply to Sarapsys [2009-01-19 02:15:22 +0000 UTC]

oh wow! so you did like wind them yourself! (that's what i meant by "from scratch") that's quite a job. i feel bad for your hands lol but it's beautiful so totally worth it!

Sarapsys In reply to casualty-of-anime [2009-01-19 03:01:36 +0000 UTC]

winding them was the easy part the power drill did most of the work. just wear work gloves and it's not so bad at all

If I could make/have a replica of this, and it could take a little beating, I'd use this during a metal concert. As in, me rocking onstage with this excellent maille piece over my shoulders.
