Description
It's a baby monkey. Specifically, it's a baby Japanese macaque. This one lives on Mt. Iwate with a bunch of other monkeys. The monkeys on Iwate are used to being around people. As long as you don't do something to piss them off, you don't have to worry about being bitten or attacked by them. I don't know if that's the case for monkeys on other mountains in Japan.
Why isn't he looking at the camera? I don't know. Maybe he's shy.

Indeed. He probably was too.
If you're in Kyoto, you should go see the monkey park.

I think he was probably okay; the little ones don't get much respect from the bigger ones though.

Well, that makes sense. Monkeys have a strong heirarchy system.

Especially that type. They're keenly aware of when another monkey has screwed something up in the ranks.

Poor little critters...I feel sorry for them when they get ostracized. In monkey societies, they even get beaten to death sometimes.

Could be. The park doesn't allow it though.
He got to eat fruit and nuts later when the park service people put some into a box for the monkeys.

He does look lonely. The other baby monkeys were off doing something else and left that one alone.
Yeah, you probably would get attacked if you tried to touch him. The adults are usually rather protective of the young ones, and they're very fast and agile.

No I think that the fact that you took the picture from behind is what makes this shot so attractive.
It gives it a nice touch. ^^

I think taking the shot from behind had a good effect, too. The baby monkeys weren't usually alone like that, so I was lucky to get such a clear pic.

I think he might be. As far as I can tell, the little monkeys tend to only get the food that the big ones leave behind so he might be hungry.

I think he's just sitting on the log. He looks kinda disappointed.
Or maybe he's hungry. The little macaques have a tougher time getting handouts from people (something people are only allowed to give them at certain parks) because the bigger macaques slap the little ones and chase them away as soon as the food shows up.

People are generally limited to giving them bananas, apples, and peanuts. That doesn't mean that nobody sneaks them anything else of course, or that they don't raid trash cans at night in the nearby town. Who knows what other things they eat.
Oh the deer. The deer in Nara are nuts. They like those cookies far more than is healthy.

I hate the gray and umbrellas, and shuffling, stamping feet.
I somehow prefer Hong Kong (go figure).

...this thread...
I don't remember the title.. I don't even remember the actual comment.
I do remember moment, early, before my programming career..
My advisor, when asked, how did you do that?, simply pointed to a book on a shelf. (We always hated when he would do that.)
