Description This is a Korean Ratsnake that is living in Kyoto. This picture is on Mt. Kurama near Kurama Temple. There were signs around warning people about these snakes, and I don't think this type of snake is supposed to be in that area to begin with.

It's a Korean Ratsnake(Elaphe schrenkii), and it was introduced to Japan from the Korean pennensula. It's a harmless species, though, but the biggest worry among naturalists is that it will either out-compete the native Japanese Ratsnake(Elaphe climacophora) or hybridize with it, eventually wiping out the native species.

The pics I saw of Korean Ratsnakes while I was trying to ID this one looked a bit different. They had more black on them, I think.

Korean Ratsnakes undergo a rather dramatic color change as they mature, with a large adult looking nothing at all like a baby. The snake you photographed looked like a juvenile-not a baby, but not an adult, either.

I do remember that there were signs up about Amur Snakes (which I think is the same thing as a Korean Ratsnake). I don't know too much about snakes.

Yes, "Amur" Ratsnake and Korean Ratsnake are two names for the same animal.
