Description The Japanese Deer, which I hear are more closely related to elk than to other deer types, are wild animals despite their behavior. In Nara's shrines and temples, especially ones connected to the Fujiwara family, they've become very used to people and have no trouble just sitting there while you take a picture.
They're friendly. Unless you have cookies, then they're overly friendly and act like big happy dogs.

This deer was taking shelter from the rain at Todaiji Temple's main gate.
