Description
For the longest time, many people have been requesting for tutorial on how to paint/speed-paint rocks...Well, this tutorial shows some of the ways I do it.
There are other methods I use but this tutorial shows the best examples to understanding the concept and not just the technique (well, i hope it does).
I hope it helps!
what software is that?
I did this in Photoshop cs2, but anyone can follow these steps using any painting/drawing software. I also just used a default brush here.
Why no textures? Rocks are often rough, right?
What is most important is to depict the form of the rock. To make it look realistic or believable, the rock should have body, and fit into it's environment. The textures are just secondary.
like my facebook page here i sometimes update it with random artworks not found here on da!

What did you use to sharpen and smooth and what not? Blurs?

no blurs used here, just one brush either harder or softer opacity, and larger or smaller brush size

Awesome! I was never really searching for rock help, but I knew I needed it. Thank you so much!
And it's nice to see another cs2 user. So many people have all of the fancy stuff. ;__;
We don't need that! What we use is skill. ..I hope.

first, since I had the screen zoomed inn, I only saw the first two lines, and was like: rocks? okey but not too impressive. I thought that was all, but then I saw the whole thing , I became like: Holy Shit, that's some pretty good damn rocks! all honor to you my friend!<3

Thank you so very much! But how do you put the shade? Mine comes out a solid color but it looks like yours has different colors for the shade

hi there!
well, i did use different colors, but mainly the pen pressure helps. If you're using a mouse, you can find a different brush, or just adjust your brush settings such as the opacity, etc...

no i have a tablet. And i got the shading just right. It came out better than i expected actually. I'll give you the results. But how did you get the grass on the rock?
