Sorry IΒ΄m afraid I canΒ΄t offer much advice. For me it works pretty good looking at stuff trying to memorize and understand how things work, and when IΒ΄m drawing only using reference when I really need to.
I sometimes do photo studies when I just want to draw but donΒ΄t feel very creative and I do life drawing from time to time.
I guess itΒ΄s basically about liking to draw, which results in drawing a lot.

More likely it's the head of the evil witch... note the apple in Snow White's hand - it had a bite taken out of it but Snow White is still all right. In fact, she's down right smug.
