I always had a severe problem to memorize "aftermath"
Always asked myself how "maths" is connected to "postlude"...

Do you, I'd never heard of the word "postlude" before ^^" Makes sense - "prelude", "postlude". Just never come across it ^^ Thank you for expanding my vocabulary!
I've just checked - "aftermath" is Old English; "mathematics" is from the Greek via Latin. So simply an unfortunate coincidence ^_^ But very useful if you happen to like writing SWSs with a lot of puns in them ^^
Thank you for the faves!

In fact, my pony for "aftermath" IS "after maths" - always something devastating involved...
Oxford Advanced says: "crop from a second growth" Hmm?..?? Not helpful IMO
And "consequence", of course... which brings me back to "maths". You can calculate the outcome.
I´m using a 1978er edition of OA dictionary for learners... Well, I read it for fun.
And a "pony" is a "donkeys bridge" - a reminder
(is "pony" a valid term?)

I would tell you off for using such an old dictionary. But I'm using one from 1982... ^^" However, I do look most things up online these days. Which I had to do rather a lot of after reading your comment ^^
"Pony"... Wasn't familiar with that one. (In that sense ^^") In my elderly dictionary it does mention it as being US slang for "a literal translation of a foreign phrase" - a crib sheet for students taking an exam. I assume that's were the broader meaning of it being a reminder comes from.
Also hadn't heard of "a donkeys bridge". Found it mentioned in a online newspaper article - in this case meaning "a severe test of your abilities" or "a stumbling block". Looking further afield I found it in the Urban Dictionary (find that extremely useful. And a bit terrifying), which did give the meaning "a reminder". So, thank you once again for expanding my vocabulary
I promise you I'm not a complete ignoramus ^^" I'm hopeful at least that I'm better at maths than you

Ah, I expand your vocabulary? Sure about that?
"donkeys bridge" is a literal translation of "Eselsbrücke" and is a short verse to remind more complicating stuff.
"a severe test of your abilities" fits somehow... you have to remember stuff, that doesn´t settle in your memory without a crutch.
English is not my 1st language, I have a whole drove of "ponies" for english words, but stumbled over the term "pony" just recently. Bookmarked "Urban Dic" now...
I was traumatized with maths in primary school, so it´s something "gore-like" for me. Like this topic... [link] - mind-twisting! Chemistry was my best...
I love to find out about the origin of words and had to pass "minor latinum" on top. That left some scars... I like "old" sources, which give uncommon definitions.

I think everyone I come into contact with expands my vocabulary You can never know it all, can you? ^^
I genuinely wouldn't have guessed English wasn't your first language I noticed you said you weren't French and I assumed you were British for some reason ^^" So is German your native language then?
I find Urban Dictionary very useful for following what young people are saying ^_^ And I love finding out about the origins of words too. The study of language is endlessly fascinating to me ^^
I'm sorry you were traumatised by maths ^^" (One of my best subjects, though I did stop studying it at 15, so I never got into the really complicated stuff... ^^") I used to really like chemistry too - but I found it too difficult when I started the advanced course at school and had to give it up. I'm best with English I think ^^

You revealed my secret - Don´t tell anyone...
I want to avoid the usual assumptions and chose "France" as a tribute to "Coneheads".
(and gathered some nice french comments btw)
I do not hide , that I´m german. I just don´t point it out. I switch mindly to english, anyway. dA is in english for me... else I would get lazy
And this asynchronous form of "talk" makes it easier, of course.
I will only improve, when talking to someone better.
1. You grew up with it.
2. You are totally nuts about words - So am I... Good conditions IMO
for example: it would be fascinating for me... not to me.
The small words are the big issues
I stopped understanding maths about the same age...
(went to school quite long - out of pure lazyness - and managed to pass finally with the worst possible result.
A little worse and I wouldn´t have passed... and had neither maths nor physics the last years. )
I love chem, because it makes "Boom" - easy to remember for me.
Did you take a look at the "manual", I mentioned in my description (moebius 3D) ? That´s guaranteed headache IMO - you should read part 1-5 first... this comic is a challenge, Petit knows, what he is talking about. I really have to use my brain to follow. That´s why I read the stuff... not a particular interest in topology . Well, I have a topo tic now.

I've started reading the manual... (^^") I'll have to get back to you on that ^^
I'm not sure that I make any assumptions about Germans ^^ Except that you all seem to be good at English (I promise to keep your nationality to myself, anyway

Hope you're feeling better!

LOL oh dear ;;
my sophomore year I was sick for nearly a month, and my geometry teacher taught me how to do all the work I missed incorrectly, so I turned in all the assignments done wrong, and got them all back failed, after weeks of catching up work... then she realized she taught me wrong and had me do it all again, and one day I got frustrated because I kept getting confused which was the correct and wrong way, and she told me I ought to give up.. I: she ended up failing me one of the two quarters I ended up having trouble with, and I had to remake it online..
now that I've given you this random tidbid.. XD;
it's what your story makes me think of, and.. :0)) since then math has been a horrible, painful chore
this is perfect XD

I found that learning became a great deal easier when there were no longer any teachers involved ^^ (Honestly.) I'm sorry that your teacher put you off maths - a lot of people seem to have been made to dislike the subject through poor teaching. I apologise for bringing up an unhappy memory ^^ At least it made you laugh ^_^

Oh, really? o: I can see that, especially because lately my math teachers have been pretty crabby ; the sad thing to me, really, is that I used to love math orz
it's a great story!! :0) very relatable apparently, haha XD

I had some great maths teachers but I did give up another subject that I enjoyed simply because of the teacher. I hope in the future you recover your love of maths - it is a fascinating area of study ^^ (It's sad in a way that so many people are identifying with the story ^_^)

You make me wonder sometimes! (or every time?-) My problems begun when I started my studies to become a teacher for maths and, ehm physics. Wrong choice: Maths were easy, maybe a little bit to easy, but physics :hrg: I failed, became depressive and now I work on a completely other field.... (one of the aftermath of that is my addiction for sudoku and other numbers

SCFrankles In reply to fantom125 [2012-06-29 20:10:02 +0000 UTC]
I adore sudoku ^_^ (Though I suppose they're logic puzzles rather than mathematical ones - I've done sudoku puzzles that used colours instead of numbers.)
*sighs* I understand your pain. Physics still makes me cry. I so wanted to be good at it but I found it terribly difficult. During the sixth form I spent most of my time working my way through the contents of the English Lit. cupboard. Unfortunately I was taking all science exams ^^ (And failed them all.) Sometimes it's hard to notice what your brain is telling you... ^^ I hope you're happy in your current field ^^

Last question first: I'm not complete satisfied, but content. Most of the times. Depends on good friends near to me as colleagues, and because it`s only ten minutes to my garden or my home.
One thought about sudoku: I always counted logic to mathematics. The numbers are staffage, that's right, but I solve it with letters or weather symbols too
