When she first adressed the court, Barran realized he had been wrong in his assessment of her. He recognized her voice. It was the voice of the unknown female in Degharra. Relieved, he decided that it would be the axe for him after all. Not some shitty work camp until he died of exhaustion. Hoping for the death sentence, he readily confessed all his crimes, in addition to a few that he had ben credited, but not actually performed. And the judge sat and smiled her way through the whole trial. He was suddenly struck by an odd premonition. This was definitely not going his way.

“Life in the mines!” she declared as his punishment, and Barran let out a groan. He knew in his heart that this sentence was not made of compassion, but of cold-hearted calculation. As she passed him on her way out, she smiled and whispered, “I told you, that you one day would tell me the truth.”

On his way back, Barran decided to test his luck. He grabbed the dagger hanging from the belt of the guard, and before the astonished guard realized that the prisoner wasn’t chained, he was dead. Barran took the guard to the nearest cell and changed into his uniform. Grinning to himself, he started on his way out. He passed several guards and saluted them properly. After all, it wasn’t too many years since he had last pulled this scam. In his mind he congratulated himself for another ingenious escape. As he was on his way out the front gate, he heard the unmistakeable twang of a crossbow. He thought he heard a female laughter as his world went dark.

This time when he awoke in darkness, he knew where he was. He was in Hell.
