this strange sense of vertigo,
as if i have left the world behind, when really
i am only halfway up the mountain.

i have already scraped so much skin
for you, stumbled over steep rocks
and broken glass for you.

i can’t help stopping to catch my breath
and admire the view.
above the fading mirage of trees, the blue
sky is smiling.

i am there, atop the sunshine, and
so are you.
