love is a deciduous tree
whose leaves flee from cold
and yield to stark monotony

autumn fire slowly withers
leaving the last dying embers behind
to crumble slowly Earthward

the tree bows its branches,
silently mourning its own fallen glory,
but only for a heartbeat:

swaying with the wind, it surrenders
its children one by one in chill gusts
then searches for freedom in the empty spaces
