i am searching for godhe is not in the depths of the oceans
nor the endless heat of the desert
nor the children's laughter at christmas
he is not in the curve of your smile
or the lines around your eyes
or the barrel of your gun
though god knows, he must know,
god knows i have looked
i am searching for god
he is not anywhere i can see
not the cancer survivor's heartbeats
nor the constant snowstorms of the artic
nor the endless motel rooms of america
though, by this point,
i must have checked every one
he is not anywhere i can see
maybe i am not looking hard enough
maybe he does not want to be found
maybe he does not want me to find him
he is not in your eyes or your heart
or your words, when you ask me
to stay the night, just this once
sick of waking up alone
god knows, he must know
i am searching,
god knows i have looked
he is not in your dreams
or the curve of your sleeping smile
i am searching for god
at least, i will start again tomorrow
