Description
you are standing to attentionback straight, eyes ahead, waiting
to be told you are allowed to relax
they are raising the flag
your shirt collar is digging into your neck
but your hands are glued to your sides
so the collar will have to be
something you live with for now,
the girl at the flag is fumbling
and your feet are starting to go numb
you are the centre of attention
everyone is looking at you
and your hands are starting to shake
you glue them to your sides
and hope no one notices
you clear your throat around the lump
of their gaze and start your sentence again
you fumble, you are hyper-aware
of your clothes and your hands and
you wait to be told
your fifteen minutes of fame are over
and you can relax
you are paying attention
or at least, you're trying to
searching desperately in the bottom
of your mind purse for a few more
alert pennies, your fingers fumble
the clink of metal is far too loud
in the attentive room full of people
with a much longer attention span than you
and your neck burns
with the weight of their gaze
and your foot is falling asleep
and you wait to be told
you are allowed to relax

this one's completely true, yeah. i'm terrible at being the centre of attention - i get shaky when i answer a question in class.
