they tell you that this is what humans do;lay down their lives for something
they might not even like next week
lay down their lives at their feet
as if they're worthless enough to be walked over
they tell you humans are either being walked over
or walking all over someone else
that this is how it works, this give and take
where you give your life and take nothing in return
where you give nothing and take everything as payment
where there is a sense of fairness, of expectation
they tell you humanity is your sense
of fairness, being slowly corrupted
they tell you there are rules and lines and
all of them go unspoken, everything is unspoken
even these things they tell you
are implied and implicit and this is what humans do
but you are not human, despite everyone's best efforts
you are some jumbled mess of instruction,
implication and rotting grace
they tell you that is human enough for now
they tell you they will catch you when you fall
but you are not so much falling as collapsing,
as decaying, you feel like you are walking
all over yourself, cracking under the weight of your bones
as if you are worthless enough
and you suppose that is human
you have certainly never been worth much
you are expendable, and you are beginning to suspect
you have been expended, you are laying down your life
for their cause, at their instruction
they tell you that is what humans do
