I love it! My favorite is Zack and Aerith, mostly just because I love Zack. This makes me want to play Crisis Core...

I agree. Can't say I like Final Fantasy VIII's couple though. The whole thing seemed forced, and the game even admits so at one point - yeah it's trying to get Squall and Rinoa together. The rest though, love 'em to death. Specifically Tidus and Yuna. Good job on the art.

no, the point is kind of that they need to get past their personal limitations. that's why it seems awkward, but it's more realistic that way.

Squall's limitation is that he chooses to be a loner who hates everybody while making no actual attempt to like other people. Rinoa's limitation is that she is too childishly naive and stupid to realize the seriousness of leading a geurilla resistance movement against a time-travelling witch who can erase her from existence with but a thought.

Don't get me wrong. I love the Final Fantasy franchise. I even like VIII's gameplay mechanics. But I hold a lot of derision for the Squall-Rinoa romance. It seemed like it wasn't developed the way it could have been and was left mostly as an after thought while they focused on other parts of the game.

ummm.... do your research, and you'll find that the entire game was built around their relationship, and how they became more mature. that was the basis for much of the design. and the reason for squall's attitude was his sister's abandoning him. it hurt him so much that he refused to get close to others, out of fear. rinoa has always been controlled by her father, so she is rebellious, and doesn't have much real life experience. i realize that the relationship is very flawed, but know your facts before making any judgment calls.

Perhaps you should do your research. Yes, Squall was emotionally damaged by his sister abandonment. He was so damaged, that he forgot his sister's name and face. Effectively making him a cold, unforgiving bastard for a reason he couldn't remember! And Rinoa's father was so controlling! After all, what self respecting parent wouldn't want their child to lead a guerrilla movement against an evil witch who regularly kills people on a whim?

Once again, this isn't an attack on Final Fantasy VIII. VIII had some interesting gameplay mechanics and a promising story about a battle against a time traveling witch trying to prevent a future where she will die. I just wish it didn't get bogged down by the poor romance between those two. Granted, a lot of the story and design of the game was focused on their relationship. However, that means that the love story should have been much better compared to what they pressed out. I mean hell, Tidus and Yuna, and Zack and Aeris/Aerith, had very good love stories, and those weren't the main focus of their respective games. Their relationships developed more naturally compared to whatever nonsense Squall and Rinoa had going on.

This isn't an attack on either of their characters either. Both of them are exemplary of their respective archetypes: Squall, the cold loner, and Rinoa, the optimistic youth. It's their relationship, which can only be called forced, that I hold contempt for.

It's like chocolate and peanut butter. Mix it right, and you get Reese's PB cups. Mix it wrong, and you get...something unpleasant.

Thanks, I feel the same way sometimes, but then sometimes I fall in love with the raw love and emotion the games have. if that makes sense? lol
