Description HERE IT IIIIIIS, the tutorial I had been working on since January.... Although it's been on a long hiatus until last month. I can't believe it is now done Special thanks to my beta readers who offered seriously helpful and constructive reviews on this. If not for you guys I doubt I would have regained the motivation to finish this c':

Eventhough it was lots of fun, this is as far as I'll go with dragon tutorials. One reason why I'm terrible at tutorials apart from confidence issues, is there is usually a ton I want to talk about and it becomes a huge mess hahah. I also have trouble explaining and especially in English. Hope all the text doesn't scare you off xD Let me know if you spot any grammar error.

In any case this allowed me to fully nerd out and express my unhealthy love for design features and unique character traits I could go on and on for hours. Starting off with the faces!

Also, sorry if the part about "drawing in your own style" feels a bit long, but I wanted to say this since I have been messaged by people several times, that they have been told to change their style and draw dragons like I do because someone told them "it's how you draw dragons, don't use your current style", and I find this really silly. It has happened enough times that I felt it needed to be mentioned. People have no right to dictate how you should draw something and state which style is "right".Β  It's also not a good idea to say this if the artist doesn't want their style being copied, but that's another topic.

Anyways, hope you'll enjoy! If you ever use this tutorial to design some charas, I'd totally love to see what you do with it c: And like I said part 2 will be here in a few days ~

People just have tthink that dragons don't exist. That means there aren't any rules. I'm a little bit critical towards the bone-rules and stuff like this because it makes sense in our biological human world but it's already completely impossible when you thΓΆink of the fire breath and stuff like this, so it's a mythical creature and nobody ever have to think about logic there. I mean of course a dragon with tiny claws and arms can be phisical strong, you don't know about how the muscles are made. Because they don't exist, they never have and they never will (at least not the dragons we imagine here)

I know your point xD but it's like a talk about the horns of unicorns, if it's logical or not depending on their material-if unicorns don't exist and already are illogical

This is absolutely amazing!
For a year I've thought about if I ever had time to do another dragon tutorial, it would be about cartoon dragons with a focus on shapes and uniqe designs. This, however is so much more well explained, I don't think i could match up to this qwq oh boy, tomorrow I'm gonna buy some new sketchbooks and fill them with dragons because this tutorial just motivated me!
thank you so much for this and I'm looking forward to the 2 other parts!Β

Also I hope everyone finds these useful. Looking at the same face syndrome example you had up there made me cringe so bad at the thought of it simply because it exists XD

Aaaah yes, I hope this can give people more ideas, and help to not just rely on cool horns/crest then consider the design done, but see those as an extra to push the unique-ness further. It's like having a bunch of people looking exactly the same except for their haircut

I actually rly love this??!? I hope it helps so many people with anatomy and shape and everything???

After I changed some of my characters body shapes and faces I was so excited because they were all actually DIFFERENT???

I also rly love the spike things. The ones that bother me most are the ones on their elbows and heels and chest??? It's just ow
I am an offender of the wing spikes though They just make good designs imo.

BUT AH CANT WAIT FOR NEXT PART?!!!

SeaSaltShrimp In reply to Squidub [2016-08-26 22:08:35 +0000 UTC]

I hope it does! :')

I KNOW once you try varying shapes and stuff you just can't stop haha IT'S SO MUCH FUN
I know c': When I see a dragon with heel/underbelly spikes and imagine it try to sit or lie down I just feel pain for the guy

You mean the elbow wing spikes or??

Squidub In reply to SeaSaltShrimp [2016-08-27 22:31:18 +0000 UTC]

ITS SO TRUE HAHA. Recently I gave my noodle hind legs that are like.. cartoony characters? Like he just walks on the entire back foot rather than the toes I guess?? ANYWAY CAN'T STOP DRAWING HIM.Β

Elbow wing spike and outer finger wing spikes ops

Ahh man I love the variation here.~Β

I havent introduced a lot of dragon-chars here, only one but I notice a lot of things here I took to heart and put into her to make her look unlike the others, this should help if I ever introduce my other characters though. (No time now.) as some kind of pointer. :') I've been looking up to this aaa.Β

These are some really awesome tips. I mean not just for dragons either. Like you said, shapes and small details can be all it takes to make two characters look really different. I probably need to draw some of my characters and vary how they look a little more. (That'll be more difficult to do with my human characters.) My animal characters I've been meaning to draw side-by-side and attempt to make them look different in shape and size.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SeaSaltShrimp In reply to ArtsyGoatAlan [2016-08-26 18:12:04 +0000 UTC]

Right, those tips can be used for any type of character! Ever since I tried varying the shapes and details of everything I never could stop haha. It probably is more challenging to do on humans if you're more used to animals though, since the face is so different;;

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ArtsyGoatAlan In reply to SeaSaltShrimp [2016-08-27 18:42:21 +0000 UTC]

Yes! Humans in general are very different from most animals, so it sometimes feel you have to learn to draw all over again with them. haha.

Can't wait for the next part, a lot of this should come in handy for future dragon artists with a bit of help, great job!
