Description
The history of this car is the most complex that it has been difficult for me to explain on my channel, so enjoy:Lada is a Russian brand (previously from the former Soviet Union) of automobiles, based in the city of Tolyatti. It is a trademark belonging to the Russian automobile manufacturer AvtoVAZ, formerly simply called VAZ. Lada means ship in the old Russian (as its logo indicates), and it is also a representation of the old pirate ships that roamed the surrounding areas, you can also find the story that refers to the word of loved or dear that represents the word Lada formerly called Zhiguli. His first vehicle was the Lada 2101, from there it became a commercial boom both within Russia and in some parts of the world.
And Latin America was no exception, reaching Cuba and Costa Rica at the beginning of the 70s. The production of the Russian brand in Chile would be at the end of 1987, being one of the most preferred brands by drivers. It would withdraw from the Chilean market in 1998, due to its value for money it was widely surpassed by other brands, but it returned in 2015, this time selling the Lada Niva as its only model.
But the one we are going to talk about today is one of those models, also known as the Riva, which became the most popular car and had the longest production time in the automotive market. The origins of the Riva are older than you might think: it's a modernized and restyled version of Lada's original VAZ-2101 type Zhiguli sedan, which was introduced in 1970 as a modified license-copy model of the Fiat 124 . VAZ, which was also called its models at that time, began development work on the renewed version in 1975, and the first prototypes were manufactured in 1977, although it would not be until 1983, three years after its launch in the Union. Soviet, when the car became available in Western European markets.
Although the Riva is officially designated and known in the national market as VAZ-2105, it has other variants that are very easy to confuse. The 2104, which is a family truck version, and the 2107, which is the same as the 2105 but with a larger grille and different taillights. They are all considered different cars rather than variants, and are part of a single "Klassika" ("Classic") family alongside older models such as the VAZ-2101.
It has a 4/5 speed manual transmission, with gasoline engines that delivered between 1.2L to 1.7L I4, which delivered 65 HP. Although a slow car, this Russian tank (as many called it in its time) was quite fuel efficient and very roomy, making export sales proving very good in Eastern Europe. n the West, Rivas had a limited presence in countries such as the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, New Zealand (where he served as a taxi) and Canada. In Finland, they had much higher sales due to the fact that Finland had closer economic ties to the Soviet Union. Canada was the only market that offered whitewall tires. The Canadian 2107s were "briefly sold as the Dennis Signet", after the importer, Peter Dennis Motor Corporation. Canadian sales, along with several European markets, ended on July 4, 1997.
Tightening safety and emissions legislation, combined with economic instability in the former Soviet Union during the 1990s, caused the Riva to be withdrawn from most Western European markets in 1997, although it remained in production in the AvtoVAZ factory in the Russian Federation and was sold as the Classic Lada. It was one of the cheapest cars available on the Russian market and remains the most popular second-hand car in Russia even after it ceased production at the end of 2010, after a production run of 30 years and almost 3,000,000 units.
In Chile, this vehicle was widely used as a family car, as well as a Taxi. If you look for this car in the country that I already mentioned, several images will appear, as well as advertising for the car. You may not see these types of Russian vehicles today, but at least there is some owner who keeps it and drives it every day, because after its production ended, many look for this car to have it as a collector's item.
