This is a Terahan an animal native to Northern Continent on the planet Nlia
NLIA
Nlia , is a planet that exists in my AU Star Trek ‘New Start’ verse
seekhim.deviantart.com/gallery…
It is the home of the Nlians who are members of the United Federation of Planets
The planet has three landmasses:
The Northern Land: A tiny northern island continent, roughly the size of Turkey.
The Western Land: A large western continent the size of Eurasia
The Eastern Land: A large eastern continent about the size of Asia.
The two southern continents are collectively referred to as the Southern Lands
They are comprised mostly of desert with arid grasslands at the northern coasts and southern tips.
THE NORTHERN CONTINENT
In stark contrast, to the Southern Lands the small Northern Continent is covered with thick forests.
It is comprised of three regions: the Northern Mountains, Central Forests, the Southern Forests
Northern Mountains
The Northern Mountains are heavily forested with Earth sized trees.
The Central Forests
The Central Forest are covered with temperate forests of towering trees many times larger than Earth trees
The Southern Forests
The Southern Forest are the wettest part of the continent, covered in swamp and swamp forest
TERAHAN
Terahans are large four-legged, mammals indigenous Northern Continent.
Territory
Terahans mostly live in the Southern Forests although a few have been found in the wetter parts of the Central Forests.
They favor swamp forests and wetlands and are almost always found near bodies of water.
Biology
Terahans are about the size of a large Earth horse and are equine in appearance.
Instead of one hoof each foot has four toes which enable them to move easily on wet and muddy surfaces.
Their ankles have sharp spurs which they use for defense and for fights.
Terahans have horse-like heads but can open their mouths much wider than horses.
Their jaws are powerful enough to crack bones.
Their teeth are large with sharp edges and they have razor sharp canines.
They are very strong and very fast
At a full sprint they can run at 50 miles per hour.
Foals can stand and run shortly following birth.
Terahans are excellent swimmers and can dive and submerge for several minutes
Often they seem to swim purely for pleasure.
They have very sharp senses and excellent night vision.
They have large luminescent eyes
When they are calm their eyes are blue.
If angry their eyes turn yellow.
Terahans can live for about 50 years.
Diet
Although Terahans are primarily herbivores - they are nonetheless omnivorous.
The majority of their diet is plantlife (grasses, shoots, leaves, roots, bark and tubers.)
They will also eat fish, as well as carrion.
They also eat bone which is a good source of calcium.
Pregnant and child-caring females frequently turn carnivorous to get nutrition for their developing young.
Intelligence
Terahans are extremely intelligent, at about the same level as an elephant or dolphin.
They are known for being extremly cunning.
Behavior
Terahans are very social and live in mixed herds of up to twenty five.
Herds are comprised of males, females and their young.
Herds are not territorial and different herds often share territories and co mingle.
Instead of a harem system, herds are formed from several adults.
Every member of the herd can and does reproduce.
Herds are led by a dominate male called the Alpha or Patriarch.
Alphas decide when and where the herd moves and protects them from danger.
The stallion that is the strongest, most cunning and protective becomes Alpha.
The oldest most experienced female acts as advisor and second in command.
As the Alpha gets older and weaker it gradually cedes control to the second most capable male.
Terahans are active during both the night and day.
When most of the herd rests the Alpha and other sentries keep watch.
Terahans are highly competitive and frequently race and wrestle with each other.
They constantly try to built up their strength and cunning.
Competitions are intense but never fatal.
Terahans are famous for their beauty, intelligence and their terrifying ferocity toward anything they percieve as a threat to them.
If attacked they will fight to the death using both their hooves and their teeth.
They are well known to kill and eat any animal that attacks them.
Terahans also remember those who have tried to hurt even years later and will attack them at a later date.
Meaning that if you try to hurt one and escape it-it will never forget it.
At the same time terahans are highly protective.
Alphas are particularly protective toward their herds and have been willing to die to protect a single member of their herd.
Terahans are very affectionate toward members of their herds and have very strong social bonds.
Even if seperated for years a Terahan will recognize a family member.
Often protective/affectionate behavior extends to other herbivores near them.
Its very common to see a Terahan grooming or playing with another herbivore.
Many animals have been known to stay near Terahan herds for protection.
Small birds and animals have been known to hitch rides on their backs while they're swimming.
Reproduction
When seeking a mate Terahans go through elaborate courtship rituals comprised of both running and swimming.
Once paired Terahans mate for life.
Female terahans usually produce a foal every two or three years.
Gestation lasts a year.
A newborn Terahan is called a foal and can stand and swim within an hour of birth.
Although primary care is done by the mother the entire herd will watch over and protect a foal.
Foals nurse for about 1 year
At the age of 1 year it is called a colt or filly.
Colts and fillies become independent at the age of two.
Although independent colts and fillies maintain strong ties with their parents and help raise younger siblings.
Terahans are sexually mature at age 4 and then called stallions or mares.
Both males and females leave their birth herds upon sexual maturity
They stay with other dispersing youths for about a year or so then either join a different herd or establish a new one.
Relations with Nlians
For thousands of years Nlians have regarded Terahans as the guardians of the southern forests.
They have admired them for their beauty and intelligence and respected them for their fierceness.
They never tried to domesticate them and didn't hunt them either.
There have been incidents of Terahans saving Nlians from drowning or protecting them from danger.
Terahans seem particularly fond of children, perhaps because they perceive them as foals
Nlians who have formed bonds with Terahans know to treat them as Owen Grady treated Velocaraptors on Jurrasic World...
with respect and to never think for one moment that they are tame.
