Description
Here's a car that's supposed to be out of this world! This was actually a qualification unit built for testing by Boeing prior to the first Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) was sent up with Apollo 15. The permitted range was up to 57 miles (92 kilometers). (None of the three LRV's which were driven to that limit.) Max speed was 9 miles per hour (14 kph). It was an all-wheel drive vehicle using a 1/4 hp motor (186.4 watt) on each wheel for a total of 1 horsepower (745.6 watts) powered by two 36 volt silver oxide batteries. The first auto repair on the moon occurred with Apollo 17's LRV. During the first EVA, one of the rear fender sections broke off which allowed the lunar dust to be kicked up by the wheel onto the astronauts and camera. They repaired it by attaching a map (using two clamps and duct tape) to extend the remaining fender over the missing section.
