Description So I've been watching a lot of movies inspired from V. Hugo's Notre-Dame de Paris, and noticed that none of them was faithful to the book concerning a scene that really caught me when I read the book.
So I decided to draw what I imagine Frollo would have done when he realised Esmeralda was going to be tortured. In the book, he mutilates himself as long as she endures the suffering, whereas in the movies, he shows no emotions.

So here it is, the face of Frollo when he hears the shouts of his beloved, before he starts to cut himself to blood.

I just noticed I forgot to comment your work!
This particular scene was also something that caught my attention when I first read the book, I think you captured Frollo's despair in that moment and we can see his anguish not only in his eyes but also in his gestures. It's a great drawing and it shows a more vulnerable side of this character that is sadly overlooked in movies.   (so far I think that Daniel Lavoie's Frollo is my favorite version, he got really close to his book counterpart. )

Thanks ! ^^

I'm seriously thinking about drawing a whole comics that would go through the entire book story from the point of view of this character. I would love to develop its youth and the years he rose Quasimodo and Jehan. There is so much to tell about this tortured mind ^^ ...

You're welcome!

That's a pretty great idea for a comic, Frollo is a very complex character so there are many scenes and aspects of his personality to explore.

yeah, i'm with you on that- i've read the book and watched several movie adaptations-   still awaiting a more true to the book movie. if they can do something as dark gritty and adult as say Game of thrones etc- they can do something with this- fingers crossed. but i think you've captured the scene and Frollo's feelings well here

Thank you very much. ^____^
I hope too. This story was very popular in the 90's, but who knows. It may come back, and nowadays censorship would not be a problem anymore (GoT is a good example).

Indeed I noticed that the video was deleted, but I was not able to watch it eventually, from this other website (unexpected hangout with friends until late).
I hope I will make it today.

I've never read the book, so I didn't know he actually cut himself while she was tortured. I think my sympathy and liking of this character just grew a bit.
Let's see, I've only seen a few of the movies so far (besides the disney one); the 1939 one he did look a bit distraught as he listened to Esmeralda's screams, the 1982 one (my favourite of the live action ones) he also did show emotion, especially later when talking about it to Esmeralda in the prison cell, breaking down in tears. Other than that I've seen the 1997 and 1986 (Australian animation), and he seemed not to care one bit for her pain in those, so I'm inclined to agree with you on those. I must get around to watching the other movies and reading the book, I love this story. C:

Anyways, nice work with this drawing. You've captured his own tortured emotions so well, and the blueish grey lighting really helps emphasize it.

I am certain I can handle it, but if it's too boring and long-nosed on words I might give it up.  Still, worth a shot.  I'll have to give it a go.

just make sure you've got a dictionary nearby XD - Lots of long words - tho there's often a translation at the bottom of the paragraph or sentence- can be a bit of a slog through Some places with the language, but stay with it- definitely worth a read. XD

Oh! What a moving drawing!! A film adaption that i think would match Claude Frollo's reaction to this scene in the 1982 version but that is my opinion
