Prologue

No cat had seen the incident unfold near the lake.
A cat was falling.
Paws stretched out; claws bathed in dark red; eyes as round as the moon above, glowing in the black depths of darkness.
Paws thudded somewhere behind the trees, a screech silenced the chaos of battle cries but they all seemed to be muffled and blurred as if they were happening somewhere far, far away. Somewhere real.
The falling was unreal.
I cant be dying, the she-cat thought desperately. I cant be!
What about her clan mates?
what will they do if her apprentice was the only medicine cat they could rely on?
Her apprentice still had a pawful to learn if the young cat was to be qualified as a full medicine cat.
And what about...?
She couldn't say it, even inside her head.
If she did, she knew her heart would break again.
No...
Please, Starclan. Help me.
The water embraced her tabby pelt, pulling her into its icy hands and dragging her down. She struggled but her wounds had immobilized her left arm and all she could do was panic and wrestle with the water helplessly.
Paws kicking, neck straining for the sky.
She finally surrendered to the lake and watched as the darkness bloomed into flowers behind her eye lids.
