Chapter 1

Mothwing

The patches of catmint waved in the faint light of Sunset.
Leaves shaded in colors of scarlet and orange crunched underneath her paws as Mothwing raced down the hills of Riverclan.
The grass were carpeted in a brilliant layer of golden light, the wind tugged her smooth tabby pelt playfully as she sprinted towards the catmint with joy dancing in her azure eyes.
"Catmint!" she purred with delight. What a treasure!
The incoming leaf-bare would be easier to deal with now that she had found fresh clumps of it growing right here in the hills! Leaning down, she bit the stalks and began piling them up. With each catmint she pulled out, she congratulated herself for finding them.
What will the other medicine cats say if she told them of her fresh clump of catmint found in the riverclan territory? For a moment, she pictured their faces filled with surprise and envy then quickly shook her head to clear such thoughts.
If Mothwing told them of what she found tonight, they'll most likely ask her for it despite her desperation to fill her medicine stock before the harsh leaf-bare arrives. Or worse, what if their clan leaders found out and demanded for them with death threats?
I'll keep it a secret, she thought. It was better both for her and her fellow medicine cats.
Tonight, the medicine cats of all four clans will gather around the moon pool to meet with their warriors ancestors. During their journey to the moonpool, they often share the news of the day.
Mothwing did not, however, meet with the 'starclan' ancestors Leafpool often talked about. Her belief of Starclan was pretence. Only Leafpool knew her secret.
"Let tonight be another good night." She muttered to herself.

"Mothwing!"
Mothwing turned to see Leafpool approaching with graceful steps from behind the curtain of trees. Under the faint moonlight, she was beautiful with silky brown tabby pelt waving with the breeze, her neatly groomed tail trailing after her silent paw steps and golden amber eyes the color of blazing sun.
For a moment, Mothwing stood there speechless, forgetting to return her greetings as the thunderclan medicine cat approached her.
"What?" Leafpool asked when she caught Mothwing's stare.
Still unable to speak, she shrugged and nodded towards the direction where the moonpool lay. Look at you, Mothwing fumed at herself. Cat got your tongue? Why cant you just say a simple "hello" back to her?
"Wait, Mothwing, what about the other medicine cats?"
Mothwing wrestled with her tongue as she choked out a stammer. "Uh... Th-they... I think they... went to the m-moon pool al-already"
"Oh. Okay." Leafpool's cautious curiousity of why the riverclan she-cat seemed nervous tonight was not said aloud but Mothwing could sense it all the same.
What in the name of Riverclan has gotten into you, Mothwing? She silently snapped at herself. You weren't used to be like this.
That was a lie.
For the past three moons, Mothwing had felt a strange uncomfortable feeling tingling inside her everytime Leafpool was nearby. She couldn't grasp the reason why but it made her look like a mouse brain and she wished the feeling went away.
"Mothwing, watch out!"
It happened all in a blur.
One moment, she was walking beside Leafpool. The next, she was flat on her stomach on the smooth boulder beneath her.
"Oh Great Starclan!" A flash of tabby face was next to hers in an instance. "Are you okay?"
It took a moment for her to realize that she had tripped and fallen into the empty hollow that surrounds the moonpool. Instead of the icy water, luck had decided to dump her face-flat on the boulder instead. Face red with embarrassment, Mothwing was about to stand back on her paws when a piercing pain burned her shoulder. Yowling, Mothwing slumped back on her side.
"Great Starclan." Leafpool inspected her injured shoulder. "I think you broke something."
The brown tabby brought her face closer and Mothwing could feel herself turning redder and the uncomfortable feeling intensified. Thinking quickly, she blurted out the first thing that came into her head.
"I didn't. I was just yowling to make sure the predators knows of our whereabouts."
Leafpool: ...
Mothwing: (Nervously) You know, when they hear a loud screech in a dead of night, they get the idea that we aren't to be messed around with.
Mothwing suddenly wished she hadn't said anything at all. The instance she opened her mouth, she realized that she was looking even more of a mouse brain with each passing heart beat. She was about to say that it was all just a joke when Leafpool broke into a purr.
"What happened, Mothwing? You've become even more funnier than before." Then with a playful flick of her tail, she meowed on. "Not to mention weird."
"So you've been here the whole time!" A call descended from above and both she-cats looked up to see Kestrelflight and Littlecloud climbing down to the Moonpool.
"Have you decided to leave us behind and march up to the moonpool?" Littlecloud asked with a hint of amusemen in his voice.
"No, Littlecloud. We thought that you were already here so we came to look." Leafpool answered back, her eyes warm with welcome.
"Well, we were a bit late." Kestrelflight added. Then after a moment of hesitation, his eyes lit up mischievously and meowed, "By the way, you two looked like a couple from above."
Leafpool swiped a sheathed paw at his ear. "Don't be silly. We're both medicine cats. Besides how could she-cats be coupled?"
"What? You haven't heard the news?" Kestrelflight looked at her surprised.
"What news?"
"One of shadowclan's warriors, I think it was Ivytail, was found flirting with her she-cat apprentice."
"Is this true?" Leafpool turned to Littlecloud who sat beside her, nodding.
"What's more," The windclan tom eagerly pressed on. "Ivytail's apprentice, Dawnpaw, is Tawnypelt's daughter."
"Let's not waste any more time talking about Dawnpaw. In case you forgot, we have a meeting to attend." Littlecloud interrupted and padded towards the water. Kestrelflight followed his lead and were asleepn in a few seconds.
"Are you going to be alright?" Leafpool turned to her Riverclan friend with round eyes of concern resting on her excruciating shoulder.
"Don't worry about me. Im fine. Its not like I have an important meeting with Starclan. Go join them" Mothwing gently pushed her towards the moonpool.
Leafpool looked back her shoulder one last time before she, like the other two medicine cats, closed her eyes and escaped into the dreams of her warriors ancestors.
Mothwing lay a few pawsteps away from her, wondering why she couldn't fall asleep but watch her in a daze without being able to look away.
"Ivytail was found flirting with her she-cat apprentice" Kestrelflight's words echoed in her ears, replaying itself over and over again, through out the night.
