Description
LeafpoolStars.
It was the first thing she saw when she opened her eyes.
Brilliant and millions of tiny crystal chips gazing back at her from the crow black sky.
The forest stretched out beneath it, their tree tops reaching out to claw the sky.
As Leafpool walked past them, she couldnt help but notice that the trunks and the leaves were shaded in dull smoky grey as if they were carved out of stones.
A small cry, defitnitly a kit's cry for its mother, called out from the darkness.
The cries grew stronger and louder as Leafpool desperatly tried to find the source of the call. She sprinted and weaved around the trunks with nimble moves.
"Where are you? I cant find you!" She called back, her ears still straining to locate the kit, her paws thudding furiously against the rotting grass beneath her pads.
A sudden flash of her memory when snow flooded from above, when the ground was layered in thick white carpet, reached out and attcked her from behind her eye lids.
For a moment, she was no longer running for something, she was still the guilty brown tabby who had strayed far from the prying eyes of her clanmates as she waited beneath the shelter of the abondoned fox den...
No! She came to a sudden halt. Stop! Please!
The memory lingered around for a moment more before it vanished without a trace. Taking in gasps of breath, she stood shakily on her paws while she recovered Β from the shock of the sudden flash back.
Pricking her ears again, the cries were nearby. It was comming from behind the berry bush, the only greenery in shades that are not grey or brown but bright green.
Taking catious steps towards the bush, Leafpool peered over it. She gasped.
On the nest of soft downy feathers were the most beautiful kittens she had ever laid eyes on.
But where was the queen?
It was a litter of four: Two were dark brown tabbies, one a tortoise shell and the other was a beautiful golden she-kit. Gently she inspected their health. No sickness or injuries. Just a slight chill.
Leafpool laid beside them, her warm body pressed against the four kittens as their cries for help faded away to soft snorings.
"Beware, Leafpool." Spottedleaf's voice whispered into her ear. "Beware of these cats."
Leafpool turned her head but the forest was empty of her presence.
When she looked back at the kits, they were no longer asleep. Instead, they were bathed in layers of blood, their amber, azure and green eyes wide open with hunger for blood.
Her amber eyes were flung open to greet the sight of the quiet moonpool before her. Kestrelflight and Littlecloud were already gone but Mothwing was lying on the same boulder watching her with worried eyes.
"You're finally awake. I tried to wake you from your nightmare but you just kept on sleeping, yowling and thrashing." The Riverclan she-cat slowly sat up, testing her shoulder and grunting from effort. Leafpool hurried to her side and offered her shoulder to lean on. Mothwing glanced at her friend's shoulder with... Embarrassment? Shyness?
"I can cope." Mothwing tried to step down from the boulder but ended up face flat on the ground.
"Dont be mouse brained! I'll walk you to Riverclan, whether you like it or not." Leafpool expected a tease shot back at her but mothwing only turned her head away, her ears the color of the setting sun.
What in Starclan is going on in her head?
-------------------------------------------------
Leafpool was unusaully taking forever to return to the camp.
Jayfeather didnt mind. He was more than happy to have the peace of the silent medicine den all to himself. What bothered him was that the medicine supply was getting low. With Leaf-bare not far off, this could create a nightmare in Thunderclan. If only his still healing hind leg was good enough to support his weight.
A few quarter moons ago, duirng his journey back to camp (after checking on the ancient stick which bears the scratch marks of cats dating back many seasons ago), he had slipped on the grass still wet from recent raining and twisted his hind leg. How he managed to crawl all the way back, Jayfeather had no idea. But he wasnt keen on crawling back out of camp and back again to look for herbs, especially when there is a healthy medicine cat working with him.
Dawn turned to morning, but Leafpool was still missing.
The rustle of paws against grass announced the arrival of Brambleclaw, the deputy of Thunderclan, carrying a small plump mouse in his jaws.
Jayfeather nodded his thanks to his father as the mouse was dropped before his paws.
"How is your hind leg?" Brambleclaw asked, sniffing the gigantic mountain of herbs glued to his leg.
"Heavy." He let out an irritated sigh, "Leafpool always overdo the healing process when it comes to me getting even the tiniest scratch. She acted like it's the end of the world when I showed her my hind leg."
Purrs came tumbling from Brambleclaw's mouth. "She just doesnt want you to end up like Cinderpelt, Jayfeather."
"That's still no excuse to waste half the herbs on a medice cat who knows how to take care of himself."
The deputy rasped his tongue affectionatly against his son's cheek before making his way back out to the clearing. Jayfeather was once again left all alone, counting the beats of his own heart and wondering just what in Starclan was Leafpool up to.
------------------------------------------------
Mothwing
"Starclan's kits!" was the first greeting waiting for her back at camp.
The whole of Riverclanhad gathered aorund the clearing, some inspecting their limping medicine cat, others shooting suspicious glares at Leafpool through narrowed eyes. Leopardstar was nowhere to be seen.
Perhaps she is out hunting.
"Starclan's kits!" Mistyfoot repeated herself again. "What in the name of Riverclan happened to you?"
Leafpool gave her a respectful bow. "She tripped and injured her shoulder, Mistyfoot."
Thank goodness Leafpool hadnt mentioned falling right into the monpool hollow. Mothwing silently thanked the thunderclan she-cat in her head. What would my clan think of me?
The sun had already risen by the time they managed to safely make the journey to Riverclan. Mothwing was exhausted from having to walk on three paws for such a long time, she leaned heavily against Leafpool, forgetting for a moment of the mysterious feeling that ticked her heart everytime they made contact.
"Riverclan thanks you for aiding our medicine cat back to her home. We will take it from here. You may leave." It was an order. Leafpool bowed her head once more at the deputy as two warriors carefully supported Mothwing with their shoulders and escorted her to the medicine den.
Mothwing felt a strange pang as she looked over her shoulder as Leafpool slowly made her way out.
For goodness sake! Of course she had to reurn back to her camp! How could you expect her to stay? she told herself.
But Mothwing, as she was dragged away by her two supportive clanmates, realized that without herself knowing she had somehow hoped for her to spend perhaps a night or two in the Riverclan with her. Even though she knew such hope would never come true.
What she also failed to realize was that Leafpol felt the same dissapointment in her. Except that she was too tired to be aware of it.
