Description "...As he reached the waterfall, he stopped to rest, admiring the mystical land he had reached...then mounted back on his horse and continued the journey, hoping to find the path home..."

Third in the series.

Well, another piece made from scratch, This one really grew on me as I was working on it. It's one of those pieces where you just want to keep working on, making it perfect as much as you can. I don't know why, but I felt a great deal of connection with this piece. The mystery, the lonesome, the search and the wonder... All of which are feelings I have longed lived. This is without a doubt one of the most profound and personal pictures I ever made.

Enjoy.

That's lovely, very atmospheric. Purple is an intimate colour in itself, and I like how it's monochromatic with contrasts of values keeping all the elements quite clear. Teh composition works very nicely. I see you put photoshop brushes to good use. The leaves on the trees look like birds themselves, taking flight, because they're "floating" on the branches. It's quite a nice result in itself, but if you didn't mean them to do that you can just add a low-opacity layer of full foliage or two underneath them. The shadows of the trees, and to a lesser degree that of the bridge, should be much lighter because the mist would not allow so much light to reach the ground. Also be careful, in some places the trees' shadows make it look like they are floating above the ground. They should be darkest where they touch the roots and then get lighter. I like the blurred effect of the water, but the bridge's reflection doesn't seem to correspond, and the shadow actually looks wider than the bridge. I wouldn't blur the shadow so much, either, but given the mist the reflection should be more prominent than the shade (it could turn out to be redundant).
Finally, I see you used the grass brush to create that vegetation wall. On the right side of the picture it works very nicely, though I would again reduce the contrast so the shadows aren't so dark – they bring too much attention to themselves and clash with the absence of bright light. On the left side it looks a bit too regular in places – maybe all you need to do is break the way they are aligned horizontally in places. You also have a blob of mist there that's a bit weird, as the rest of it hovers subtly and horizontally over the rest of the picture – this attracts the eye in a place you don't want it to stay so long.
The grass in the foreground has too much contrast as well within itself, it makes it look too textured compared to the flatness of the trees and their leaves. We don't need to see every blade of grass
I hope that wasn't too much nitpicking!

Ok Serg I have seen your work for a long time now and in the photomanip dept you are good but average if you know what I mean. Please dont take this comment in the wrong way.

I think what Im trying to say here is that this is just fantastic. I think this is where your talent really lies. This is the art form that you should excel in. This is just fantastic work, something that one would see in a book as a story Illustration.

This just blows me away my friend.

Id like to know how you created the walls next to the waterfall.

sergiofx In reply to Noko [2006-12-29 01:08:53 +0000 UTC]

lol, yea I know what you're talking about.

I always think that my manipulation lack that extra edge you know? That something that will finally take me to the next step, I always search for it. But I won't give up on that, I'll keep working on myself, what is life if we are not learning right? And even if it takes me longer than other artists, I know I'll get there if I put my head into it.

As for this style, it kinda surprises me what I can come up, especially that I didn't do so much of this stuff a whole lot you know? Just a few pieces, maybe 5 or 6, and yet, when I start coming up with something, I can't seem to let it go, and I just find myself lost in the world of fantasy. It's such a great feeling, to step away from the dark emotions and go running free in fantasy land you know?

I know I'll be more of these, every time I create something new, I discover new techniques and I have the time of my life.

Thanks
