Absolutely fantastic. You've captured the Gammell style really well. Welcome to the group and many thanks for the s.

Thank you so much!  I really appreciate that!  ^w^
I haven't had much luck finding any articles that go into detail about his techniques, so I've just been eyeballing his illustrations and doing my best to replicate some of the linework and shading.  XD

You're welcome. I've had that problem myself trying to replicate his work. My best guess would be black India ink, and maybe working into wet paper for the backgrounds. Definate use of blowpens as well. I may be completely wrong though.

Hmm, I dunno.  It just looks like straight up pencil to me, with varying degrees of graphite thickness and line/shading styles.  Possibly even charcoal pencils too, which would definitely explain how fine the smudging is, and how jet black other parts are.
I actually had to look up what a blow pen was when you mentioned it.  I see that it's kind of like a manually-operated airbrush?  XD

It is yeah. I was thinking of a sort of straw for blowing ink into random lines. I've seen them in craft shops. I can see how it could be pencil. I'd love to know for certain.

What tools and techniques have you been using for your recent drawings? Seems like you have the technique spot on now.

For this piece (Faceless Horror), just plain old drawing pencils and a smudge stick.
For all of my recent Gammell pieces, charcoal pencils and a smudge stick.  The soft and medium pencils are good for most of the dark and heavy stuff.  The hard pencil, I've discovered, is good for the finer lines and small details.
With the "Red Spot" drawing, I used a teeny tiny bit of white acrylic paint using a very thin paintbrush for the white dots in the face wound.  X3

You seem to have a wide knowledge of traditional materials. In the past I used regular graphite pencils but couldn't get the smudge effects. The charcoal pencils seem to work really well.

I'm just flying by the seat of my pants here, lol.  I don't have any formal training beyond a few basic college courses.  Most of what I do I figured out on my own by futzing around and failing a lot.  XD

I like to hope that it's the best way. I haven't done any formal training since high school. Your techniques work really well.
